Your Opportunity:

Our GTA-based Transportation team is seeking a Senior Design Manager to lead multidisciplinary design teams on large-scale transit and rail projects in our growing transit-based sector. You will be accountable for the technical quality, coordination and delivery of design from preliminary engineering through detailed design, construction support and handover. You will work with major public agencies on traditional detailed design assignments and with contractor partners on design-build, progressive design-build and collaborative contracts.

*This is a flexible role, both in the working environment and as a key part of our team, building on-going partnerships with our clients, innovative planning for the future of our business, growing together with our leaders and our partners in this new dynamic working environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead the integrated design of large multidisciplinary transit and rail projects (track and alignment, civil, structures, stations, systems, utilities, drainage and geotechnical), making sure the design is technically sound, coordinated and constructible.
  • Build and manage the design team, including subconsultants. Define roles, resources and design deliverables in line with the project's design management, quality and BIM plans.
  • Manage the design scope, schedule, budget and forecasts. Monitor progress and earned value, and identify and manage design-related risks and opportunities.
  • Manage interfaces between disciplines and with the contractor, systems providers, the owner and third parties. Maintain the interface and requirements registers and show how the design meets the project requirements.
  • Lead design progression through staged submissions (for example 30/60/90 and Issued for Construction) and oversee design reviews, interdisciplinary coordination, independent checking and responses to owner and independent certifier comments.
  • On design-build projects, work closely with the contractor's construction, estimating and planning teams on constructability, staging, value engineering and cost and schedule optimization.
  • Manage design changes, RFIs, submittals, non-conformance reports and design support during construction through to as-built records and handover.
  • Obtain approvals and permits from municipalities, utilities, rail operators, conservation authorities and other agencies.
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for the client and project partners, building strong, trust-based relationships.
  • Uphold quality management, safety-in-design and risk management practices, and champion our safety culture.
  • Support the review and negotiation of design contracts and subconsultant agreements, and help assess changes, claims and disputes.
  • Mentor and develop technical staff and contribute to pursuits, proposals and growth of the transit business.

Your Capabilities and Credentials:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, with 10+ years of progressive experience in transportation infrastructure design, including leading design on large transit, rail or highway projects.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), or able to obtain licensure.
  • Proven experience as a Design Manager or Design Lead on design-build, P3, progressive design-build or alliance projects, preferably on either the contractor or the owner side.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable standards and owner requirements (e.g., Metrolinx, MTO, municipal standards, AREMA as applicable).
  • Experience with design management and digital delivery tools (e.g., BIM, ProjectWise or a similar data environment, document control and scheduling software).
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is an asset.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to align multidisciplinary teams and resolve technical issues under commercial and schedule pressure.
  • Strong organizational skills and sound judgment in balancing technical quality, cost, schedule and risk.
