Moodle with us!

At Moodle, we’re on a mission to empower educators and learners worldwide with open, flexible, and innovative digital learning solutions. As the world’s most customisable and trusted open-source LMS, we partner with schools, universities, and organisations to create better learning experiences for millions. If you’re ready to make a real impact, and be part of a global movement shaping the future of learning, join us. Let's transform education together!

About the role..

As a Senior Front-end Developer in the Design System team, you'll play a key role in bringing our design system to life across Moodle's products. You'll work closely with engineering teams to help them adopt the design system, and you'll make changes directly in the product codebase to move that adoption forward following the Moodle contribution process. You'll also build scalable, accessible design system components with modern front-end architecture in React. You'll review and integrate code into production releases, making sure the Design System releases land smoothly for the teams using them.

What You'll Do..

Most days in this role involve a mix of:

  • Working closely with product engineering teams to help them adopt the design system, including pairing with developers, answering questions and unblocking migration work.
  • Making changes directly in Moodle's product codebase to replace legacy UI with design system components.
  • Helping drive continuous improvement of our AI-first consumer strategy, making sure the design system's components, code and documentation work well for AI tools as well as for the teams and developers who use them.
  • Building and maintaining scalable, accessible design system components in React.
  • Writing clean, well-structured front-end code that others can learn from and build on.
  • Reviewing code from the Design System team and product teams, giving clear, constructive feedback.
  • Writing automated and manual tests, and helping design test approaches that catch issues before they reach users.
  • Troubleshooting complex front-end problems, finding root causes and guiding the fix.
  • Creating clear developer documentation for design system components, and working with Technical Writers and UX Designers on user and developer guidance.
  • Spotting ways to improve quality, accessibility, performance and security, and then making those improvements.
  • Taking part in sprint planning and estimation.

We’d love to meet you..

Especially if you can tell us about your:

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills in English, with a strong ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Strong front-end development experience, particularly with React, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern web standards.
  • Proven experience with AI-assisted development: You are well-versed in using AI to build applications, reviewing AI-generated code, and integrating these tools into your daily workflow to move faster and smarter and solve problems.
  • Experience in version control using Git.
  • Ability to thoroughly test integrated code, perform QA testing, and identify potential impacts of changes.
  • Ability to create and maintain informative documentation both within code and consumer resources.
  • Experience in issue tracking with Jira.
  • Ability to mentor and coach others, contributing to team development and knowledge sharing.
  • Understanding of software and application design, front-end architecture, performance, security, and accessibility.
  • Proficient in writing various types of tests (unit, automated, QA, accessibility) and conducting code reviews following Moodle standards.
  • Experience working as a part of a Design System team, especially if you were a part of the 0-1 build.
  • Experience in onboarding developers to using a design system
