At National Gas, the work we do matters.
As Britain's national gas network, we help keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm by maintaining the critical infrastructure that transports gas across Great Britain. While providing the energy security Britain relies on today, we're also helping transform the network for a clean energy future.
Join us and help secure Britain's energy.
About the role:
The Senior Development Engineer operates at the forefront of the UK’s energy transition, supporting the development of technically robust, commercially credible infrastructure solutions across National Gas’s 3‑molecule strategy.
With an inclusive and collaborative approach, you will apply strong engineering, analytical, and commercial insight to shape multi-molecule transmission solutions, enabling decarbonisation, security of supply, and long-term value for customers and stakeholders.
You are motivated to solve problems at the intersection of people, planet, and prosperity, supporting both technical delivery and business growth. The role will use engineering and analytical capabilities to investigate infrastructure solutions that address climate change.
Key accountabilities:
- Apply engineering and analytical capability to support the development and design of transmission infrastructure across hydrogen, CO₂/CCUS, and natural gas / low carbon gas systems.
- Work collaboratively with strategy, commercial, network planning, and asset teams to develop credible multi-molecule infrastructure options.
- Applying engineering and analytical expertise to support and shape internal and external specialist technical, engineering, and commercial studies, including defining scope, developing technical assumptions, reviewing and challenging analysis, interpreting outputs, and translating findings into clear, decision ready recommendations.
- Lead or contribute to cross organisational and external partner projects that advance National Gas’s 3-molecule strategy.
- Provide technical input to business development initiatives, including new project concepts, partnerships, and investment propositions.
- Contribute to the development of long-term investment cases, regulatory submissions, and strategic business plans.
- Actively contribute to innovation and learning across emerging technologies and new business models.
- Establish positive, productive relationships with internal teams, regulators, customers, and industry partners.
- Applying technical judgement to develop and review internal and external communications, briefings, and presentations, ensuring that engineering assumptions, analysis, risks, and options are accurately represented and clearly articulated to support stakeholder engagement and decision-making.
- Track progress against project and team deliverables, ensuring outputs are coherent and decision ready.
About you:
- A STEM degree or equivalent relevant experience in engineering or infrastructure development,
- Problem-solving skills with the ability to work across technical and commercial boundaries,
- Strong technical report writing and communication skills,
- Effective stakeholder management,
- Experience working across multiple energy vectors or regulated infrastructure environments,
- Understanding of economic regulation and investment frameworks,
- Experience supporting business development, partnerships, or new market opportunities,
- Confident presentation skills for technical and nontechnical audiences,
- Infrastructure project development experience, including preFEED or equivalent early stage studies.
- Leadership or technical mentoring experience would be very well regarded
What we can offer you:
- Up to £65,000 dependant on experience
- Market-leading double-match pension (for every £1 you add, we add £2)
- Annual performance bonus
- 26 days holiday plus 8 statutory days and option to buy 5 additional days
- 10x salary life assurance and income protection
- Flexible opt-in salary sacrifice benefits including private healthcare, car, dental, and technology schemes
- Family-friendly policies, wellbeing support, and professional development opportunities
