About Us

Expert Listing is a Lagos proptech platform for verified property listings, covering buy, rent, lease, commercial, and joint-venture deals, across Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan, Kano, and Port Harcourt. We're a small, growing engineering team responsible for the platform's infrastructure and reliability.

Why This Role Exists

Expert Listing's infrastructure and deployment process have grown ad hoc, handled between the CTO and the engineering team alongside their other work. As the platform scales, that's no longer sustainable: deployments carry more risk, incidents take longer to catch and resolve, and there's no dedicated owner for uptime, security, or cost. This role exists to take infrastructure off the engineering team's plate and own it properly.

The Role

A senior, hands-on DevOps role reporting to the CTO, with full ownership of Expert Listing's infrastructure, deployment pipeline, and production reliability.

• Own the platform's cloud infrastructure end to end: provisioning, scaling, security, and cost.

• Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines so engineers can ship safely and often.

• Set up and run monitoring, logging, and alerting so issues are caught before users report them.

• Lead incident response: be the first line on production issues and drive root-cause fixes, not just patches.

• Bring infrastructure-as-code and repeatable, documented processes to a team that currently manages servers by hand.

• Advise the CTO on infrastructure strategy, tooling choices, and technical risk as the platform grows.

What Success Looks Like

30 days: You've audited the current infrastructure and deployment process end to end, identified the biggest risks and quick wins, and fixed at least one of them.

60 days: Core infrastructure is under infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD is more automated and reliable, and basic monitoring and alerting are live for the platform's critical paths.

90 days: You're the clear owner of infrastructure and uptime, with documented runbooks and an incident process in place, and the CTO is spending measurably less time firefighting infrastructure issues.

What We're Looking For

• 5+ years in DevOps, SRE, or infrastructure engineering, including time owning production systems independently.

• Hands-on depth with a major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or similar), containerization (Docker; Kubernetes experience a strong plus), and CI/CD tooling.

• Experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or similar) and setting up monitoring and observability from scratch.

• A track record of leading incident response and turning outages into permanent fixes, not repeat firefights.

• Comfort operating with real autonomy in a small team: this role sets its own priorities day to day, reporting to the CTO rather than a larger platform team.

• Startup or high-growth product experience is a strong plus.

The Challenge

Every applicant completes this before a final interview. It tests hands-on infrastructure ability and the judgment to make a small platform more reliable without over-engineering it.

Part A, Infrastructure design (take-home). Expert Listing's platform today: a web app and API deployed manually to a single cloud server, with a managed Postgres database. Deployments happen by SSH-ing in and pulling the latest code. Design the CI/CD pipeline and infrastructure-as-code setup you'd introduce to fix this, and explain the tools and sequence you'd use to get there without downtime.

Part B, Incident scenario. It's 2am. Monitoring shows the platform's search feature returning errors for roughly 20% of requests, but the site itself is up. Walk through how you'd triage this: what you'd check first, in what order, and how you'd decide whether to page anyone else.

Part C, Scaling judgment (a few sentences). Expert Listing is running a major promotional campaign next month and expects traffic to spike 5x for about a week. What would you do to prepare the infrastructure, and what would you deliberately not do given the short timeline?

We're evaluating judgment and hands-on ability, not polish. A clear, well-reasoned answer beats an exhaustive one.
