We’re looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to join our team on a large-scale application migration and modernization program for a major US enterprise organization.
The initiative focuses on migrating enterprise applications and infrastructure from VMware-based environments to Microsoft Azure, including both Azure-native services and Azure Local.
This is a hands-on engineering role combining Terraform, Azure DevOps, infrastructure engineering, application migration, networking, automation, and production cutover execution.
You will work as part of a small cross-functional delivery team alongside a Cloud Architect, QA / Test Automation Engineer, and Delivery Manager, collaborating directly with client platform, network, security, database, and application teams.

Project Overview

The program involves migrating a significant enterprise application and virtual machine estate from VMware-based infrastructure to Azure and Azure Local.
Rather than introducing a new DevOps platform, the team works within the client’s existing infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, security, networking, and operational standards.
The initiative focuses on:
  • Infrastructure as Code: extending and using existing Terraform modules
  • CI/CD Automation: enhancing Azure DevOps pipelines for provisioning, deployment, validation, and promotion
  • Application Migration: migrating Windows and Linux workloads from VMware environments
  • Azure & Azure Local: provisioning and configuring cloud-native and hybrid infrastructure
  • Network Cutovers: executing firewall, IP, routing, load-balancer, and DNS changes
  • Migration Automation: scripting repeatable migration, configuration, and validation activities
  • Production Cutovers: executing migrations during controlled change windows
  • Validation & Hypercare: validating migrated applications and supporting post-cutover stabilization

Technology Landscape

Primary Cloud: Microsoft Azure
Hybrid Cloud: Azure Local / Azure Stack HCI, Azure Arc
Source Platform: VMware vSphere / vSAN
Infrastructure as Code: Terraform
CI/CD: Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions
Scripting: PowerShell, Bash, Python
Networking: Azure VNet, NSG, routing, load balancers, private DNS, firewalls
Identity & Security: Microsoft Entra ID, Managed Identities, Service Principals, Key Vault
Migration: Azure Migrate and comparable replication/migration tooling
Operating Systems: Windows Server, Linux
Containers: AKS / Kubernetes
Secondary Cloud: AWS

Responsibilities

  • Review and adopt the client’s existing Terraform modules, repositories, naming conventions, tagging standards, pipeline structure, and promotion processes.
  • Extend existing Terraform modules rather than introducing parallel infrastructure tooling.
  • Develop workload-specific Terraform configurations for Azure-native and Azure Local environments.
  • Provision virtual machines, Arc-enabled VMs, networking, storage, images, identities, and related infrastructure.
  • Maintain appropriate Terraform remote state, environment separation, and pull-request/code-review practices.
  • Extend Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions pipelines with provisioning, deployment, validation, and environment-promotion stages.
  • Support controlled promotion through development, test, QA, and production environments.
  • Analyze discovery and assessment information and provide technical input into application disposition, sizing, dependencies, and migration planning.
  • Validate application and infrastructure dependencies through configuration analysis and observation.
  • Produce application-specific network specifications and firewall rule translations.
  • Coordinate networking changes with enterprise network teams.
  • Develop migration runbooks and detailed cutover procedures.
  • Define and document rollback criteria.
  • Build automated infrastructure and smoke-level validation covering VM availability, services, ports, connectivity, checksums, and application readiness.
  • Execute the complete migration lifecycle for assigned applications.
  • Build target infrastructure through Infrastructure as Code.
  • Configure applications on target environments.
  • Script and execute data and configuration migrations.
  • Coordinate database migration activities with client database teams.
  • Execute network, firewall, load-balancer, and DNS cutovers.
  • Perform post-migration technical validation.
  • Provide hypercare support following production migrations.
  • Produce as-built documentation and migration/cutover records.
  • Capture actual migration effort, technical lessons learned, and improvement opportunities.
  • Continuously improve migration runbooks and automation based on completed waves.
  • Work directly with client platform, network, security, database, and application teams.

AI Engineering Mindset

We expect engineers to actively use modern AI-assisted development tools to increase productivity and improve delivery quality.
Practical experience using AI for Terraform development, scripting, pipeline development, troubleshooting, test generation, documentation, and code review is strongly preferred.
Candidates should be comfortable treating AI as part of the engineering workflow while retaining ownership of technical decisions, security, code quality, and production outcomes.

Development & Migration Practices

The engineering approach emphasizes:
  • Infrastructure as Code
  • Reusable Terraform modules
  • Git-based development and pull-request reviews
  • CI/CD-driven infrastructure deployment
  • Automated infrastructure validation
  • Repeatable migration runbooks
  • Scripted migration and configuration activities
  • Controlled environment promotion
  • Production change management
  • Explicit rollback criteria
  • Post-migration smoke testing
  • Hypercare and structured handover
  • Continuous improvement based on migration-wave actuals
The priority is successful application migration. Automation should accelerate and standardize delivery without becoming an objective in itself. Where necessary, documented manual or semi-automated processes may be used while automation matures.
