The Senior Director Accounting/Finance provides strategic and operational leadership for accounting, financial close, statutory and regulatory reporting, and financial systems activities. The role ensures accurate, timely, and compliant financial information across multiple ledgers and legal entities while maintaining strong accounting governance and controls. The Senior Director partners with actuarial, operations, treasury, technology, FP&A and business leaders to evaluate financial results, resolve complex issues, and support informed decision-making. The position supports significant platform implementations and process changes, including financial design, testing, reconciliation, and issue resolution. The role also leads and develops the finance team by establishing priorities, coaching team members, and promoting accountability and continuous improvement.

Key Accountabilities

  • Financial Close & Accounting Governance
    • Lead the monthly close process and coordinate close calendars, task lists, cutoffs, accruals, actuals loads, and multi-ledger activities.
    • Oversee recurring and manual journal entries, account reconciliations, consolidations, eliminations, and intercompany settlements.
    • Review financial results, flux and variance analyses, issue logs, and remediation activities to maintain accurate and timely reporting.
    • Maintain accounting governance across ledgers, including chart-of-accounts and vendor-to-P&L mapping standards.
    • Communicate financial results, risks, and recommendations to leaders and stakeholders with varying levels of financial expertise.
  • Premium, Claims Reserve, & Finance Operations
    • Direct premium, subsidy, self insured, and claims-reserve accounting and reconciliation
    • Partner with actuarial and pharmacy stakeholders to evaluate assumptions, entries, trends, and emerging financial issues.
    • Oversee broker commissions, vendor payments, invoice matching, ledger posting, and payment reconciliation controls.
  • Statutory, Regulatory, & Audit Reporting
    • Own Medicare Cost Reports, supplemental schedules, statistical reporting, and other state and federal regulatory deliverables.
    • Direct CMS reporting activities, including APTC, PPR, and risk-adjustment reporting and related reconciliations.
    • Support year-end financial statement audit and respond to external and regulatory audit
    • Ensure submissions are accurate, timely, complete, and supported by appropriate documentation and controls.
  • Financial Systems & Platform Implementation
    • Support finance workstreams for major platform implementations or integrations
    • Direct financial-process design, account and vendor mapping, testing, data validation, reconciliations, and control development.
    • Coordinate issue identification, escalation, resolution, and readiness activities across Finance, Technology, Operations, and vendors.
    • Establish sustainable post-implementation processes and monitor results to address gaps
  • People Leadership: Leads and develops employees to achieve business objectives while fostering an inclusive, compliant, and performance-driven work environment
    • Sets clear expectations, provides ongoing coaching and feedback, and supports employees' professional growth
    • Ensures compliance with company policies, employment laws, and HR programs
    • Promotes engagement, collaboration, and accountability while aligning team outcomes with organizational goals
    • Provides strategic leadership and people direction by setting vision, developing talent, and ensuring organizational effectiveness, compliance, and alignment with enterprise priorities

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with preference in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a closely related field
  • 12+ years of progressively responsible accounting or finance experience

  • 5+ years in a leadership position in a large accounting team

    Health insurance industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

CPA, Workday or other ERP systems experience

    This position is an Office role, which requires an employee to work onsite, on average, 3 days per week. We are open to candidates located near one of the following office locations: Minnetonka, MN

    The full salary grade for this position is $150,000 - $257,200. While the full salary grade is provided, the typical hiring salary range for this role is expected to be between $150,000 - $225,015. Annual salary range placement will depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, education, work experience, applicable certifications and/or licensure, the position's scope and responsibility, internal pay equity and external market salary data.  In addition to base compensation, this position may be eligible for incentive plan compensation in addition to base salary.
