Senior Drilling & Completions Engineer
Role Overview
Reporting to the VP Corporate and Engineering Services, this role is part of the team which is
accountable for the planning, design, execution, and optimization of Rubellite's drilling,
completions, and well intervention programs.
Working across Rubellite's heavy oil and Clearwater assets, the successful candidate will work
with the Manager, Drilling & Completions to take wells from concept through execution and postwell
evaluation, partnering with multidisciplinary teams to safely deliver cost-effective, highperforming
wells. The role combines technical expertise, operational execution, capital
stewardship, with data analytics and a mindset for continuous improvement to maximize asset
value.
Success Profile
This role requires an experienced drilling and completions engineer who thrives in a collaborative,
entrepreneurial environment and enjoys taking ownership of projects from data-driven design and
planning through execution, and then maximizing learnings and future performance through
rigorous lookback analysis.
Specific initiatives include:
- Deliver drilling and completion programs safely, on schedule, and within budget.
- Set the bar for safety as priority one in everything we do, through both proactive measures
and processes to drive continuous improvement. - Implement rigorous cost optimization through risk-managed design improvements and
supplier negotiation. - Optimize well designs to improve cost per meter, production performance and capital
efficiency. - Continuously improve drilling and completion performance through risk-managed
technical innovation, post-well learning and data analytics. - Evaluate emerging drilling and completion technologies and recommend practical
improvements to enhance operational performance. - Support capital planning and long-term asset development.
- Build strong relationships across Engineering, Operations, Geology, Reservoir, Production,
Land, Regulatory, and Supply Chain. - Proactively collaborate across the organization to ensure preparedness to execute a
spectrum of potential programs, responding with nimbleness to evolving business priorities
contingency planning for future drilling programs.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
Drilling & Completions
- Collaborate with asset teams to understand broad spectrum of risks and activate risk
mitigation planning. - Plan, design, and execute drilling, completion, and well intervention programs, stick
diagrams and well schematics. - Develop technically sound and economically optimized well designs.
- Monitor operational performance and provide engineering support throughout execution.
- Conduct post-well reviews and incorporate lessons learned into future development
programs. - Utilize data analytics and AI tools to prepare real time drill curves compared to budget,
identify cost reduction opportunities, drilling optimization ,process improvements and key
drivers of execution performance and variance - Conduct offset well reviews to support design optimization and risk reduction.
- Coordinate vendor input across drilling, fluids, cementing and directional services.
Capital Planning & Commercial Stewardship
- Prepare AFEs, cost estimates, and technical input supporting capital planning.
- Monitor project costs, schedules, and performance against approved budgets.
- Identify opportunities to improve capital efficiency and reduce well costs.
Operational Excellence
- Promote safe, efficient, and reliable execution across all drilling and completion activities.
- Ensure compliance with corporate standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best
practices. - Support continuous improvement through engineering analysis, data analytics, operational
learning, and technical innovation. - Maintain and improve internal tools, datasets and engineering processes
Asset Development & Collaboration
- Partner with Geology, Reservoir Engineering, Production Engineering, Operations, and other
stakeholders to optimize well performance and maximize asset value. - Support reserves development, annual development planning, and technical evaluations.
- Build strong relationships with drilling contractors, consultants, and service providers.
Leadership & Competencies
- Strong technical expertise in horizontal multi-lateral drilling, completions, and well
construction along with experience in drilling thermal wells. - Performs with a high level of accountability for identifying value-adding opportunities and
completing all tasks, projects, execution on time and on budget. - High level of creativity for solving problems and investigating new areas for value-adding
opportunities

Safety
- Identify and operationalize safety initiatives within the drilling and completions group.
- Strong communication on risk-assessment and safety, demonstrating leadership
particularly with concurrent operations between all field teams on site and off script tasks. - Liaison with industry group on new safety initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation, Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) or Professional Technologist (P.Tech.(Eng.)) designation
- 7–12 years of progressive drilling and completions engineering experience within the
upstream oil and gas industry. - Field experience on drilling/service rigs.
- Experience with heavy oil development, Clearwater assets, and multi-lateral well-designed
and execution along with thermal well design is considered a strong asset. - Experience preparing AFEs, supporting capital planning, and managing drilling and
completion projects from concept through execution. - Strong understanding of Alberta regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
- Current well control certification Second Line Supervisor Well Control is required.
- IADC WellSharp or IWCF would be an asset.
- Valid Alberta driver’s license and willingness to travel to field and rig sites as required.
- Proficiency with the following software is an asset: Quorum Execute, PetroSight, Qbyte, Enverus OpenInvoice, Pason, geoSCOUT, AbaData, Microsoft 365, including advanced Excel, SharePoint well files, Teams and Power BI, and ComplyWorks.
