Net Power is an energy technology and project development company focused on the development of natural gas power generation projects to meet growing demand for reliable power. Our near-term development activities are focused on delivering natural gas power generation, with equipment designed to accommodate carbon capture in later phases.

Our vision is to make natural gas the lowest cost form of clean firm power.

Our impact is transformational - Headquartered in Houston, Texas, we aspire to improve the communities where we work and we’re committed to pioneering advancements that redefine the energy landscape, ensuring a better future for generations to come.

Job Overview

Net Power is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to support the development, engineering, and execution of complex power generation projects. This role will include significant engineering and design review responsibilities, technical oversight of complex engineering calculations, studies, report writing, field investigations and act as technical resource for engineers and designers.

The Senior Electrical Engineer will have significant engineering and design review responsibilities, technical oversight of complex engineering calculations, studies, report writing, field investigations and act as technical resource for engineers and designers.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership throughout the complete project lifecycle—from feasibility studies and conceptual design through detailed engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operational handoff. This position requires strong experience with onsite power generation, medium- and low-voltage distribution, microgrid controls, energy storage, system protection, and data center reliability requirements.

This role is based on-site at our office in Houston, TX (located in the energy corridor). A hybrid work schedule is offered (3 days office / 2 days remote). Travel to the project site will be required; frequency will depend on project phase (heavier during construction).

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the electrical design of fully islanded, behind-the-meter microgrids and onsite power plants serving large-scale data centers.
  • Develop reliable power system architectures incorporating technologies such as reciprocating engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, battery energy storage systems, renewable generation, and backup generators.
  • Establish electrical design criteria, basis-of-design documents, system narratives, equipment specifications, and engineering standards.
  • Design medium- and low-voltage generation and distribution systems, including substations, switchgear, transformers, busways, UPS systems, automatic transfer schemes, and critical power distribution.
  • Develop single-line diagrams, protection and control diagrams, grounding plans, equipment layouts, cable schedules, and interconnection drawings.
  • Define generation dispatch, load-sharing, synchronization, load-shedding, spinning-reserve, black-start, and system-restoration strategies.
  • Engineer electrical systems to meet data center availability, redundancy, maintainability, and resiliency objectives, including N, N+1, 2N, and distributed-redundant configurations.
  • Perform or oversee load-flow, short-circuit, protective-device coordination, arc-flash, motor-starting, transient-stability, harmonic, grounding, and reliability studies.
  • Develop protection philosophies and relay settings for generators, transformers, switchgear, feeders, bus systems, and battery energy storage systems.
  • Coordinate microgrid controllers, power plant control systems, generator controls, energy management systems, SCADA, and building management systems.
  • Evaluate dynamic system performance during generator trips, large load steps, equipment failures, black-start events, and transitions between operating states.
  • Support electrical equipment selection, technical bid evaluations, vendor drawing reviews, factory acceptance testing, and procurement activities.
  • Coordinate designs with mechanical, civil, structural, controls, fire protection, telecommunications, and data center engineering teams.
  • Work with authorities having jurisdiction, permitting agencies, owners, contractors, equipment manufacturers, and commissioning providers.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, startup, commissioning, integrated systems testing, and performance validation.
  • Review contractor submittals, requests for information, field changes, test procedures, and commissioning results.
  • Identify technical and operational risks and develop practical mitigation strategies.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical direction to internal teams, consultants, and engineering partners.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging onsite generation, energy storage, microgrid control, and mission-critical power technologies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. (Degree from an ABET accredited university).
  • 8-10 years of progressive electrical engineering experience involving power generation, microgrids, industrial power systems, mission-critical facilities, or data centers.
  • Demonstrated experience designing behind-the-meter or islanded power systems capable of operating independently from the utility grid.
  • Strong knowledge of medium- and low-voltage power generation and distribution systems.
  • Experience with onsite generation, generator paralleling, microgrid controls, protective relaying, grounding, and black-start systems.
  • Experience performing or reviewing power system studies using ETAP, SKM PowerTools, EasyPower, PSCAD, PSS®E, PowerFactory, or comparable software.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code and applicable IEEE, NFPA, NEMA, UL, and local requirements.
  • Understanding of data center electrical infrastructure, critical loads, UPS systems, redundancy strategies, and high-availability design.
  • Ability to develop and review engineering calculations, specifications, drawings, studies, and technical reports.
  • Strong technical leadership, analytical, communication, and multidisciplinary coordination skills.
  • Ability to travel periodically to project sites, vendor facilities, and commissioning activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Professional Engineer license or ability to obtain PE licensure.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Experience designing large-scale power plants or microgrids dedicated to hyperscale, colocation, or high-performance computing data centers.
  • Experience with battery energy storage systems, renewable generation, fuel cells, gas turbines, or natural-gas reciprocating generation.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NFPA 110, NFPA 855, IEEE protective-relaying practices, and applicable UL energy-storage standards.
  • Experience with critical-power commissioning, integrated systems testing, failure-mode analysis, and reliability modeling.
  • Familiarity with modular power plant design and phased capacity expansion.
  • Experience serving as engineer of record or electrical discipline lead on complex, multidisciplinary projects.
  • Familiarity with emissions, fuel-supply, environmental, and permitting considerations affecting onsite generation.

Additional Requirements

Candidates must be able to perform essential functions as outlined above, including but not limited to:

  • Operate at a computer and sit for long periods of time.
  • Repeat motions that may include the wrists, hands, or fingers.
