Show job description

PJA is one of the leading independent transport, engineering and placemaking specialists in Australia and the UK, with two offices in Australia and eight in the UK.

We provide specialist advice on a wide range of projects across Australia, the UK and beyond, from new neighbourhoods and urban regeneration schemes to civil infrastructure design and delivery. Our strength lies with our team of people, all of whom have been employed for their unique skills and talents – but if you cut us in half you’ll find the same core values all the way through us: we are credible, engaging and creative, and our mission is to create better places through great design.

As we continue to grow in Australia, we are looking for a talented Senior Engineer to join and strengthen our Melbourne civil team.

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on, technically focused role for a civil engineer who takes pride in high-quality design and delivery. Working under and being mentored by our Principal Engineer, you will assist in the civil design and delivery of a broad range of infrastructure projects, with an emphasis on roads and civil works, stormwater, drainage and water sensitive urban design (WSUD). You will also support our junior engineers and drafters.

Working closely with the Directors and Principal Engineer, you will help deliver our growing portfolio of Melbourne projects, develop your skills and experience, and collaborate with our transport planning, engineering and placemaking specialists.

Key Responsibilities

Technical delivery

  • Assist the Principal Engineer in the civil design and delivery of infrastructure projects across roads and pavements, stormwater, drainage and WSUD (including retarding basins and wetlands), bulk earthworks and broader civil works.
  • Prepare high-quality detailed designs, drawings, models and documentation in accordance with Australian Standards and relevant authority requirements.
  • Undertake and review civil design and drainage/stormwater modelling using tools such as Civil 3D, AutoCAD and DRAINS.
  • Manage your own workload and deliverables across concurrent projects, supporting delivery through concept, detailed design, documentation, approvals and construction support.

Mentoring & collaboration

  • Provide guidance, technical support and design review to junior engineers and drafters, supporting their development.
  • Share knowledge and contribute to a collaborative, supportive and high-performing team culture aligned with PJA’s values.
  • Collaborate across PJA’s transport planning, engineering and placemaking teams to deliver integrated outcomes.

Client & stakeholder support

  • Support communication with clients, councils, referral authorities and other consultants to help progress projects and secure approvals.

About You

Essential

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in civil engineering, ideally within a consultancy or land development environment.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ local civil engineering design experience in Australia.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Membership of Engineers Australia.
  • Strong technical design skills across roads, stormwater and drainage, and earthworks, with sound knowledge of Australian Standards.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting junior engineers and drafters.
  • Good communication, problem-solving and time-management skills.
  • Eligibility to work in Australia.

Desirable

  • Working towards Chartered status (CPEng) and / or National Engineering Register (NER) inclusion.
  • Registered Professional Engineer of Victoria (RPEV), or eligibility to obtain, supported by PJA (preferable, not mandatory).
  • Proficiency with Civil 3D / AutoCAD and DRAINS, or similar civil design and drainage software (desirable, not essential).
  • Experience working with Victorian councils and water authorities.

As a Member of the PJA Team, You Can Expect

  • An attractive and modern working environment with good accessibility by all modes of transport.
  • Direct mentorship from senior leadership team.
  • Career growth opportunities.
  • A wide range of challenging projects.
  • Opportunity to undertake approved training schemes and development opportunities at a pace and direction that suit you.
  • Ongoing support, training and mentoring from senior professionals within the business, with a real commitment from senior management towards personal and professional development.

We also offer an attractive benefits package that includes:

  • Competitive salary.
  • The ability to purchase additional days of leave.
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements to allow working from home as needed and agreed with management.
  • Payment of professional subscription.
