Who We Are
In Melbourne, water is essential to our way of life.
As caretakers for Melbourne’s water cycle, we care for water, life and land throughout Melbourne: both its people and its biodiversity.
Each time you drink from the tap, flush a toilet or kayak down the Yarra, we’re there. Primed and ready, quietly delivering some of the world’s cleanest water for over five million residents and wildlife that call Melbourne home, just as we have for over 130 years.
If you value making it count, diving in with curiosity, and doing what’s right, you're in the right place.
About The Role
As Melbourne Water continues to invest in the future of Operational Technology, we're expanding our Asset Knowledge & Technology team with several newly approved roles. This Senior Engineer Industrial Networking position is part of an exciting period of growth, helping strengthen and enhance our OT capabilities and critical infrastructure.
Reporting to the Team Lead OT Cyber Engineering, this permanent, full-time role will provide advanced engineering expertise across Melbourne Water's industrial networking and communications environment, including industrial ethernet networks, telemetry and radio systems, network infrastructure, and connectivity across SCADA, PLC, RTU and broader OT platforms.
As a senior engineering professional, you will solve complex technical challenges, lead key engineering work packages, and provide technical approval within your area of expertise and professional registration. The role also offers opportunities to work across teams, building broader experience while maintaining a consistent level of accountability and technical authority.
In this role you will:
- Deliver safe, compliant industrial networking solutions across Melbourne Water's Operational Technology (OT) environment, applying professional engineering expertise to complex technical challenges.
- Lead engineering work packages from design through to configuration, testing, commissioning and operational handover.
- Approve engineering designs and technical outcomes in accordance with Melbourne Water and industry standards, such as AS/IEC 62443, NIST-CSF, ASD Essential 8 etc.
- Complete network zoning risk assessments in line with AS/IEC 62443 and apply compensating controls based on site criticality
- Configure, maintain and optimise industrial network infrastructure including switching, routing, firewalls, wireless, telemetry and communications systems.
- Diagnose and resolve complex network and connectivity issues, contributing to incident response, root cause analysis and asset reliability improvements.
- Provide technical governance, approval and direction to internal stakeholders, vendors and system integrators, ensuring quality, safety and maintainability outcomes.
- Support continuous improvement of engineering standards and practices while mentoring Engineers and Graduates across the organisation.
About You
You are an experienced OT networking professional with a passion for solving complex technical challenges and improving the reliability, security and performance of critical infrastructure systems. You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy working across engineering, operations, cyber security and project delivery teams.
You will bring:
- Technical expertise and will have comprehensive knowledge of and experience with industrial networking, cybersecurity principles and industrial computer systems.
- Demonstrated experience delivering industrial networking solutions within operational environments such as water, utilities, mining, rail, energy or other heavy industries.
- Comprehensive knowledge of and experience with industrial networking, cybersecurity principles and industrial computer systems. It would be advantageous to have prior experience with Hirschmann and Cisco Infrastructure.
- Expertise in Cybersecurity practices including AS/IEC 62443, NIST CSF and Essential 8 principles. It would be advantageous to have industry based industrial cybersecurity certifications.
- Strong expertise in industrial network design, configuration, troubleshooting, testing and commissioning, including switching, routing, firewalls, wireless and telemetry technologies.
- Knowledge of industrial networking protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, DNP3, IEC 61850, PROFINET or equivalent, along with network segmentation, zoning and OT cyber security principles.
- Proven ability to apply professional engineering judgement to complex technical issues across the asset lifecycle, including reliability, maintainability, condition assessment and asset renewal activities.
- Understanding of safety-in-design, engineering risk management and formal change management practices within operational or safety-critical environments.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience coaching and mentoring engineers, managing competing priorities and operating effectively within live operational environments.
- A recognised engineering qualification and Registered Professional Engineer Victoria (RPEV) registration (Electrical/Cyber), or the ability to obtain registration within six months of commencement.
- The ability to obtain and maintain an AusCheck Clearance. (please see important information below*)
We offer a hybrid working arrangement with 50% at home and 50% in the office. Noting Melbourne Water has multiple operational sites, you will be required to do 2-3 site visits each month; therefore it is mandatory that you have a Driver’s Licence.
