Senior Engineer (Ingestion)

TypeScript, Node.js, ClickHouse, Event-Driven Data Pipelines

Why join Levellr

Levellr is the enterprise community intelligence platform for Discord, Reddit and a growing range of community platforms, trusted by major gaming companies like Scopely, Krafton, and Epic, alongside global brands such as Google, YouTube, and SoundCloud to grow and monetise their communities.

With millions of messages generated, turning raw activity into clear insight is difficult. Levellr helps teams understand members, spot trends, improve engagement, and make data-driven commercial decisions.

This depends on reliable data ingestion. Our dashboards, reporting, and AI tools require timely, accurate data processing. As we expand customers and sources, ingestion sits at the core of our platform growth.

What you'll work on

You'll join our ingestion squad as a Senior Engineer owning end-to-end data collection, processing, and storage across our integrations.

As we transition to an event-driven architecture, you will design event flows, queuing, retries, failure recovery, and data consistency at scale.

Handling millions of messages, you'll focus on throughput, latency, deduplication, backfills, schema design, and data-store performance while building pipeline observability.

Collaborating with product and AI teams, you'll identify pipeline bottlenecks and deliver continuous incremental updates in ambiguous problem spaces.

You’ll also help us add new platforms fast (Discord, Reddit, Steam, X and customers’ own sources), building the system that makes each new integration quick and cheap, increasingly with AI agents doing the build.

How we ship

Levellr has a strong bias towards shipping and learning from production. We ship early, iterate rapidly, and learn from production. Core systems like Levellr AI moved from initial concept to shipped foundations in weeks.

For ingestion, this pace requires care. Our transition to event-driven architectures must be incremental to ensure continuous data flow.

This demands strong engineering judgement—knowing when to simplify, invest in core foundations, refactor, or adjust approaches quickly.

The level we're looking for

We need a hands-on Senior Engineer who has owned high-volume production data pipelines and can take immediate system ownership.

You can detail past systems you owned, including throughput volume, load patterns, performance bottlenecks, and structural optimizations.

Production experience with messaging queues, pub/sub, or streams is essential, alongside understanding ordering, idempotency, retries, and dead-letter handling.

You proactively address risks, communicate technical trade-offs, and take accountability for operational health in production.

What good looks like in you

  • Solid backend engineering experience with significant focus on data pipelines and infrastructure.

  • Proficiency with TypeScript and Node.js across backend services and database stores.

  • AI-native engineering day to day: you build with coding agents and know where they help and where they bite.

  • Strong data-store skills at scale (schema design, query optimisation, indexing, partitioning), ideally across both relational and analytical stores such as ClickHouse.

  • Hands-on ownership of ingestion edge cases: rate limits, schema drifts, backfills, and partial failures.

  • Focus on pipeline observability, monitoring data freshness, and maintaining strict data quality standards.

  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, establish technical clarity, and drive progress independently.

  • Preference for incremental delivery based on real-world usage rather than lengthy isolated development cycles.

  • Clear communication through concise PRs, technical docs, and async updates that elevate team performance.

  • Located in European timezones with core overlap with UK business hours.

This role probably isn't right if

  • Your experience centers primarily on standard SaaS features without backend data complexity.

  • Your core focus is building AI applications rather than underlying data ingestion systems.

  • You haven't directly owned high-volume data pipelines in production environments.

  • You haven't worked with data at a scale where schema design, indexing and query optimisation really mattered.

  • You require extensive pre-defined structure to operate and deliver.

  • You prefer extended planning cycles or total rewrites over continuous production deployment.

  • You struggle making quick technical trade-offs under dynamic conditions.

The tools we use

  • TypeScript, Node.js, NestJS and React across the product.

  • PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, BigQuery, Redis and PubSub across data, analytics and messaging.

  • Google Cloud, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions and Cloudflare for infrastructure and delivery.

  • Google Agent Platform (Vertex AI), OpenAI, Anthropic and other LLM platforms across our AI systems.

Nice to have

  • Experience with GCP Pub/Sub, Kafka, or equivalent event-streaming technologies.

  • Familiarity with Temporal or other durable execution frameworks.

  • Hands-on work with third-party platform APIs, handling rate limits and dynamic payloads.

  • Direct experience managing Discord, Reddit, or social media datasets.

  • Exposure to how ingested data feeds downstream AI or search systems.

  • Background in high-growth startup environments driving fast-paced technical decisions.

  • Experience migrating live systems toward event-driven architectures without service interruption.

  • Track record of impactful technical writing, open-source projects, or engineering documentation.

Who we are

Levellr was founded by Tom (CEO) and Ben (CTO), who have experience in both start-ups and large scale companies (YouTube, Eleven Sports). Since 2021 we’ve grown the team to 30+ employees and are backed by a number of successful angels (Mark Pincus, Dylan Collins, Mitch Lasky, Bing Gordon, Frank Gibeau to name a few). The product that we are building is growing in multiple verticals, seeing a 6x growth over the last 3 years and on track to continue.

We believe in substance over hype. We're a product-led company building a sustainable business by solving our customers' most pressing problems. This allows us to create a culture and a company that we're proud to build together. Some of the values we stand for:

We have ownership. We embrace change and take bold risks.

We get shit done. We have a bias for action and love creating value from our code and our conversations.

We disagree and commit. We give radically honest feedback and challenge assumptions, then get behind the result & move on.

We grow in uncertainty. We embrace change, learn from feedback, and continuously improve what we do for our customers.

We care. We care about our team, our customers, and the communities we serve.

  • Highly competitive basic salary - full details shared at the initial interview stage

  • 25 days annual leave plus UK public holidays.

  • Remote or hybrid working, with flexible working hours.

  • Co-working space access, including Soho Works locations across London and the US.

  • Stock option plan.

  • Home office budget once you pass probation.

  • Mental health support through Spill.
