Join us as we work to create a thriving ecosystem that delivers accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare for all.

We are looking for a talented Senior Engineering Manager who will lead and grow high-performing engineering teams while remaining hands-on with modern systems and services. This hybrid role is based in Boston, MA and focuses on shipping reliable, scalable software using Java, React, AWS, event-driven architecture, GraphQL, and SQL DBs.

The Senior Engineering Manager partners with product and architecture to deliver measurable business outcomes and operational excellence.

Team Summary:
As athenaCollector expands to more practices and specialties, we are investing in revenue cycle management solutions that improve billing speed and accuracy at scale.
This is an opportunity to shape modern platforms that streamline claim workflows, reduce denials, and support data-driven decisions across diverse healthcare organizations. You’ll lead and build high performing software development teams, drive modernization (cloud-native services, eventing, and APIs), and deliver solutions that improve performance, resilience, and maintainability.

The work spans new feature delivery, re-platforming legacy components, and strengthening reliability through automation, observability, and rigorous operational practices.
If you are passionate about combining strong technical depth with people leadership and you take pride in clear goals, accountable delivery, and continuous improvement, you’ll help us advance healthcare technology in meaningful ways.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop software engineering teams to deliver high-quality services and user experiences that meet defined outcomes and OKRs (Objectives, Key results).
  • Own delivery for multiple initiatives, set goals, clarify scope, align dependencies, and manage risk to achieve predictable, on-time results.
  • Stay hands-on through architecture reviews, design spikes, code and pull-request reviews, and targeted contributions for critical paths.
  • Guide the design and evolution of systems, promote patterns for scalability, reliability, and security.
  • Improve engineering practices for testing, CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery), observability, incident response, and post-incident learning.
  • Partner with product, UX, and architecture to translate requirements into clear technical plans and incremental milestones.
  • Recruit, manage, and grow engineering talents, provide coaching, clear expectations, and feedback that supports career development and team health.
  • Integrate agentic AI and AI-assisted tools (for example, coding assistants, test generation, and release copilots) into engineering workflows, evaluate measurable impacts of AI.
  • Track and communicate progress, risks, and trade-offs with clarity, hold teams accountable to measurable goals and customer impact.

Additional Job Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to multi-year technical roadmaps and modernization strategies aligned with business priorities.
  • Lead technical deep dives to diagnose and resolve complex production issues across distributed systems.
  • Drive cost-aware architecture, capacity planning, and performance optimization in cloud technologies.
  • Collaborate on vendor/tool evaluations and contract decisions in partnership with procurement and security.
  • Participate in cross-functional planning and represent engineering in broader organizational initiatives.

Expected Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10–20 years of experience in software engineering and technical leadership, including people and team management.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with Java and React in production systems, including code review and design leadership.
  • Good experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS), event-driven architecture, GraphQL, and SQL DBs.
  • Proven track record delivering complex, distributed systems with clear goals, measurable results, and reliable operations.
  • Experience establishing CI/CD, automated testing, observability (metrics, logs, traces), and incident management at scale.
  • History of mentoring engineers and technical leads with effective performance management and career development.
  • Success partnering with product, UX and architecture to prioritize roadmaps, sequence work, and manage dependencies.
  • Experience evaluating and adopting AI-assisted and agentic tools to increase throughput and quality while maintaining safety and compliance
