Help shape how power plant chemistry supports the safe, reliable and efficient operation of nuclear facilities throughout their lifecycle.
Would you like to apply your power plant chemistry expertise to operating nuclear facilities, new nuclear projects and international customer assignments? In this role, you will influence how chemistry functions, programmes and practical operating arrangements are developed from the early project phases through commissioning and long-term operation.
About the role
We are looking for a Senior Expert in Power Plant Chemistry to strengthen our Operations and Maintenance Engineering team in Engineering & Projects. You will apply your expertise in assignments supporting Fortum's nuclear fleet, new nuclear projects and external nuclear customers. Engineering & Projects provides technical expertise and delivers projects across our Nuclear Businesses, employing around 200 top professionals. We support new nuclear development, external customers through Nuclear Services, our co-owned nuclear plants in Sweden and Finland, and our fully owned Loviisa Nuclear Power Plant in Finland.
A key part of the role is supporting operational readiness by developing chemistry functions, chemical control programmes and operating arrangements for new nuclear facilities. You will help define how chemistry activities are organised, resourced and implemented throughout the plant lifecycle, from design and commissioning to operation, maintenance, outages and decommissioning.
The role covers the overall chemistry function, including primary and secondary circuit chemistry, laboratory activities, sampling and monitoring, on-site preparation and handling of chemicals, chemical inventories and logistics, environmental matters and applicable regulatory requirements.
Your position is in the Strategic Engineering and O&M department within the Engineering & Projects business area. The position can be based in Keilaniemi, Espoo, Finland and/or Solna, Sweden. Hybrid working is possible in accordance with Fortum's practices. The role involves cooperation across Fortum and with external customers, suppliers and partners, and regular collaboration with colleagues in Espoo and travel within and between Sweden and Finland, as well as occasional travel to other countries.
About you
You will be well positioned to succeed in this role if you have:
- A relevant technical or scientific degree, for example in chemistry, chemical engineering, process engineering, environmental engineering or a related field.
- Several years of experience in nuclear power plant chemistry, conventional power plant chemistry, industrial water chemistry or related expert assignments.
- A strong understanding of how chemistry affects plant safety, equipment integrity, corrosion, radiation protection, availability and environmental performance.
- Experience in one or more areas such as primary or secondary circuit chemistry, radiochemistry, chemistry laboratories, chemical management, corrosion control, environmental compliance, commissioning or nuclear operational readiness.
- The ability to work independently, take initiative and translate chemistry requirements into practical solutions for plant design, projects and operation.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills and professional proficiency in English. Finnish and/or Swedish language skills are considered an advantage.
- You can lead the work of colleagues, consultants and stakeholder interfaces in your expertise area.
We are looking for broad-based expertise, but we do not expect every candidate to be an expert in all areas from the outset. A demonstrated ability and motivation to build a comprehensive understanding of the power plant chemistry function, develop new capabilities and take ownership of new topics is equally valued.
We offer you
A unique opportunity to contribute to the development of nuclear operational readiness and influence how chemistry activities are organised and implemented in future nuclear facilities. You will work with experienced nuclear professionals in varied assignments covering operating plants, new nuclear projects and international customer work.
At Fortum, we believe in a better future and want to be involved in shaping it. Our workplace is a safe place, both physically and mentally. You will grow with professional colleagues, being trusted and free to challenge yourself. We offer comprehensive benefits, flexible working hours, and hybrid work model to support your productivity, development and wellbeing.
