Join Musgrave – A Legacy of Innovation, Community, and Excellence

By supporting thousands of retail and foodservice family businesses, we make a positive impact on the communities they serve. We're committed to becoming the most trusted and sustainable business in Ireland, and we're looking for dynamic, forward-thinking individuals to join us on this journey.

As we continue our journey toward becoming Ireland’s most trusted and sustainable business, we have an exciting opportunity for a successful candidate to join our Financal Control team.

Role Purpose

The Senior Financial Accountant – Northern Ireland is a senior Financial Control role responsible for the financial accounting, control, compliance and reporting agenda supporting the Musgrave Northern Ireland business.

The role owns cashflow forecasting, capital expenditure and depreciation reporting, quarterly HMRC compliance, intercompany governance in an outsourced operating model, and control and assurance reporting including MACSAC.

Working closely with NI Finance, Group Financial Control, Tax, Treasury, the outsourced service provider and External Audit, the role provides accurate reporting, independent challenge and assurance over the NI control environment, while driving standardisation and continuous improvement in line with the Group Financial Control agenda.

What you'll be doing:

Cashflow, Capital Expenditure & Depreciation

  • Own the preparation, review and challenge of short and medium-term cashflow forecasting for the NI business, including variance analysis against actuals. Including working capital reviews.
  • Forecast and report capital expenditure and the associated depreciation profile, working with business owners to validate phasing, spend and asset readiness.
  • Ensure capital spend is appropriately authorised, correctly capitalised and depreciated in line with Group accounting policy.
  • Provide insight to NI and Group leadership on cash, capex and depreciation trends, risks and opportunities.

Tax & Statutory Compliance (HMRC)

  • Prepare, review and submit quarterly HMRC returns for the NI entities, ensuring accuracy, completeness and timely filing.
  • Coordinate the quarterly VAT product file review process, engaging commercial and master data stakeholders to confirm correct VAT treatment and resolve exceptions.
  • Maintain robust documentation and audit trail supporting all returns and product file decisions.
  • Work with the Group Tax team on technical queries, legislative change and HMRC correspondence.

Intercompany Oversight & Outsourced Model Governance

  • Provide oversight and governance of intercompany transactions, balances, reconciliations and settlement across NI and Group entities.
  • Act as the retained control owner over activities performed by the outsourced service provider, reviewing outputs rather than performing the underlying processing.
  • Monitor service performance, SLA delivery and escalations, ensuring issues are resolved and root causes addressed.
  • Ensure intercompany balances are agreed, eliminated correctly on consolidation and supported by clear documentation.

Controls, Assurance & Reporting

  • Own MACSAC reporting for the NI business, including self-assessment, evidence, scoring and remediation of control gaps.
  • Ensure period-end controls, balance sheet reconciliations and journals meet Group standards and are reviewed on a timely basis.
  • Support internal and external audit requests and ensure timely closure of audit and management actions.
  • Prepare clear control and financial reporting updates for Financial Control forums and senior leadership.

Additional Financial Accounting Activity

  • Support the acquisition agenda within Retail.
  • Support lease accounting, including new leases, modifications and related disclosures.
  • Support insurance accounting, renewals data and related cost allocation.
  • Review employee expenses for compliance with policy, VAT treatment and control standards.
  • Support statutory financial statements preparation and audit for the NI entities.
  • Support wider Group Financial Control, transformation and process improvement initiatives as required.

What we are looking for:

Essential

  • Qualified Chartered Accountant (or equivalent).
  • 3+ years post-qualified experience in financial accounting, financial control or audit.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge and understanding of internal controls and financial governance.
  • Experience of cashflow forecasting, fixed assets and capital expenditure reporting.
  • Practical VAT and indirect tax compliance experience, ideally including HMRC filings.
  • Strong analytical, reconciliation and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with and challenge an outsourced service provider in a retained oversight model.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills across finance and non-finance audiences.

Desirable

  • Experience in retail, wholesale or FMCG.
  • Knowledge of UK and Irish tax and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Experience with Oracle, Onspring, Power BI or similar finance and control systems.
