About Manta Cares
Navigating cancer is like embarking on a treacherous hike without a map, gear, or guide. Manta Cares is a beloved AI patient platform. We support cancer patients & their families through every one of the 500+ decisions that they will navigate.
We are a digital health company founded and led by cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and oncologists. We’re already partnering with several top life sciences companies (e.g., Gilead, Novartis), and healthcare systems. Our team brings over 50 years of combined healthcare experience, with backgrounds at McKinsey, BCG, Stanford, MIT, Harvard, IDEO, and ASCO. Backed by top-tier venture funds including Pear Ventures, Sozo Ventures, and 1843 Capital.
The Opportunity
Hope, our AI companion, and the Notebook, where patients keep notes, medical documents, track appointments and symptoms, are at the center of how patients use Manta. We're hiring a Senior Full-Stack Engineer to make them smarter, faster, and more useful.
This is a senior IC role on a small team where every engineer owns part of our platform and product. You'll take features from rough spec to shipping code across the stack and work closely with product, design, and our clinical team. You'll report to Elisabeth Boonin, our Head of Product Development.
The engineering team is a small, committed team of software veterans who balance agentic programming with human experience. We understand that quality vs quantity is the wrong way to think about things, because poor quality slows you down. We’re big on experimenting where it’s easy to replace and being thoughtful for deeper investments in backend architecture and data models. We each feel particular ownership for some aspects of the codebase, but we’re not territorial and contribute across the stack-- basically a smart and friendly bunch, ready to help each other out. We're excited to grow our capacity by finding a new teammate!
What You'll Do
Ship features end to end: Owning the UI, APIs, data model, tests, and release, then tracking how patients use it to guide what comes next. Upcoming work includes:
Making the patient Notebook smarter: Hope AI and the Notebook are siloed today. Connect their content and features so Hope can help patients manage the chaos of their cancer journey
Raise Hope AI’s quality: Build new LLM features, sharpen Hope's voice toward shorter, clearer answers, roll out model upgrades, and build evals that catch regressions
Moving from chatbot to agentic partner/guide: Build a shared conversation state that persists across turns, and modernize our Postgres migrations and database tooling so the data model can evolve quickly
Raising our engineering bar:
Shape how we build: Contribute to Hope's core AI agent, code review, engineering standards and agentic development tools and patterns
Strengthen shared systems: Work on cross-feature backend systems like our GitOps infrastructure, database migration system, authentication, jobs and pipelines, etc.
What We're Looking For
Must Haves
Product engineering track record (5+ years): you've shipped user-facing features end to end and can point to systems you designed or scaled
Full-stack TypeScript: browser to API, including hands-on React and NodeJS api servers
LLM features in production: you've worked on LLM features in shipping products (e.g. chatbots, agents, streaming features) and understand the potential pitfalls of running them in production
Self-directed: you've owned and built significant full-stack projects, taking ambiguous requirements to shipped product with minimal specs and close collaboration with product and design
Strong with data models and systems architecture: relational schema design and migrations (Postgres preferred), designing and deploying cloud applications (AWS preferred)
Bonus Points
Python (Hope is built in Python)
Mobile or hybrid apps (Capacitor, React Native) and shipping to app stores
Healthcare or privacy-sensitive domains (such as HIPAA)
Terraform/DevOps
This Role Is NOT For You If
You talk architecture but don't write the code
You're rigid about tools or languages; our codebase spans TypeScript, Python and Go
You want to build a team or move into management; this is an IC role on a small team
Compensation & Equity
Base: $170K-$230K based on experience
Equity: Competitive
Health: Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental
PTO: Flexible
How to Apply
Apply with your resume and, in a few sentences, tell us about the full-stack feature you're most proud of shipping to real users: the product and roughly how many people used it, one thing that broke in production, and how you fixed it. If you have published code or open source projects to share, we’d love to see that too.
