About the role

Tyro Health is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help us build and scale the claiming and payment experiences that make healthcare easier for providers and patients. This is a full-stack role with a strong backend focus- we’re looking for someone who thinks deeply about correctness, resilience and how services behave in production. You’ll stay hands-on while owning significant technical work, shaping technical direction and helping us mature our approach to reliability, observability and production operations. You’ll also mentor engineers and raise the technical bar across the team.

What you'll do

  • Backend Ownership: Design, build and operate the services behind Tyro Health’s claiming and payment flows, with a focus on correctness, resilience, observability and graceful failure.

  • Technical Leadership: Lead significant pieces of technical work, drive the technical approach and make pragmatic decisions when the path forward isn’t already defined.

  • Production Excellence: Help strengthen how we run our services through better monitoring, observability, SLOs, operational reviews and incident practices.

  • Integrations: Build and maintain APIs and integrations with health funds, payment networks and third-party providers, navigating external systems and legacy protocols along the way.

  • Data & Domain Modelling: Model complex claiming and payment domains across relational and NoSQL data stores, with a strong focus on consistency, migration safety and auditability.

  • Full-Stack Delivery: Work across the stack when needed, including building and integrating frontend experiences that connect with the services and APIs you own.

  • Reliability & Scale: Identify opportunities to improve service health, performance and scalability as Tyro Health continues to grow.

  • Own What You Build: Stay close to your services after release, troubleshoot production issues and participate in the team’s paid on-call rotation.

  • Lift the Team: Set a high bar in code reviews, mentor other engineers and proactively improve engineering practices as you go.

  • Collaborate: Work closely with product, design and engineering teams to turn ambiguous problems into thoughtful, well-built solutions.

What you'll bring

  • Backend Depth: Strong experience building and owning complex backend systems in production. Node.js and TypeScript experience is highly valued, but we’re open to engineers from other backend stacks who have a track record of successfully moving between technologies.

  • Production Mindset: You think beyond shipping code to how services will run in the real world — monitoring, reliability, incidents, troubleshooting and ongoing operational health are part of engineering to you.

  • Technical Ownership: You’re comfortable being given a problem rather than a set of instructions, and can work out and drive the technical approach from there.

  • Distributed Systems: Experience with APIs, asynchronous or event-driven architectures and the failure modes that come with distributed systems.

  • Data Expertise: Strong SQL fundamentals and practical experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases, including data modelling, schema evolution and performance.

  • Cloud Experience: Experience working in AWS or similar cloud environments, with exposure to infrastructure-as-code such as Terraform.

  • Full-Stack Mindset: You don’t need to be a frontend specialist, but you’re comfortable jumping into React and TypeScript when the work requires it.

  • Leadership: You’ve led meaningful technical work, mentored engineers and can influence outcomes beyond your own codebase.

  • Adaptability: You’re comfortable with ambiguity, changing priorities and the pace of a product-led environment.

  • Security Mindset: You understand the responsibility that comes with sensitive and transactional data and build with security and data integrity in mind.

  • Product Empathy: You care about the experience behind the technology and want to build healthcare products that are reliable, accessible and genuinely useful.

Technologies You'll Work With

  • Backend: Node.js, TypeScript, Express and REST APIs.

  • Data: Relational and NoSQL data stores.

  • Frontend: React, TypeScript, modern CSS, Zod and TanStack.

  • Cloud & Delivery: AWS, Terraform, CI/CD tooling including GitHub Actions and Buildkite.

  • Architecture: Distributed and event-driven systems, APIs and third-party integrations.

What’s in it for you?

We’ve worked hard to create an environment that’s big on diversity, inclusion, and flexibility, and one that suits the changing needs of team members across Australia. Here are just some of the things Tyros tell us they love about working here.

You’ll also receive:

  • Learning and career development opportunities

  • 18 weeks paid primary carers leave

  • 12 weeks paid secondary carers leave

  • Annual team-based volunteer day

  • Birthday Leave

  • Power Up Day (Additional day of leave)

  • Weekly team social events, snacks, craft beer and wine, ping pong and video games

  • Taco Tuesdays

  • Mental health and wellness initiatives

  • Novated leasing
