This role supports product development, client delivery, implementation, production troubleshooting, testing, architecture discussions, documentation, and strategic interoperability initiatives.
Acting as a bridge across product, engineering, quality, architecture, implementation, client-facing teams, and industry standards groups, this role translates complex HL7, FHIR, CDC, and jurisdiction requirements into practical application behavior. The SME helps ensure interoperability capabilities align with implementation guides, jurisdiction needs, responsible AI practices, and real-world Immunization Information System (IIS) workflows.
What You'll Be Doing:
Serve as the organization's go-to expert for HL7 v2 immunization messaging, IIS workflows, and healthcare interoperability standards.
Partner with Product, Engineering, Quality, Implementation, and Client teams to design, enhance, and support interoperability solutions.
Translate complex HL7, FHIR, CDC, and jurisdictional requirements into product functionality, business requirements, and test scenarios.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex interoperability, data quality, message validation, and production support issues.
Lead and support FHIR initiatives, including SMART on FHIR, Bulk Data Exchange, patient matching, and emerging interoperability capabilities.
Provide guidance on IZ Gateway implementations and cross-jurisdictional data exchange with IIS and federal partners.
Analyze interoperability and operational data using SQL and reporting tools to identify trends, root causes, and opportunities for improvement.
Represent the organization in industry workgroups, standards organizations, Connectathons, and interoperability forums to stay ahead of evolving standards.
Leverage AI-assisted tools and best practices to improve standards analysis, documentation, data quality investigations, and interoperability workflows.
What We're Looking For:
Deep expertise in HL7 v2.x, including VXU, QBP/RSP, ACK messaging, immunization workflows, patient demographics, and vaccination data.
Strong understanding of healthcare interoperability standards, including HL7, FHIR R4, CDC guidance, IIS workflows, and healthcare data exchange.
Experience translating technical standards and business requirements into clear documentation, testing scenarios, and application behavior.
Hands-on experience troubleshooting message validation, patient matching, data quality, and interoperability issues in production environments.
Strong SQL skills with the ability to investigate complex data issues and perform operational analysis.
Knowledge of REST and SOAP services, OAuth 2.0, SMART on FHIR, and healthcare integration patterns.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Proven ability to collaborate across multiple teams and influence decisions in a fast-paced environment.
Strong analytical and organizational skills with experience managing risks, dependencies, assumptions, and technical documentation.
What Would Make You Stand Out?
Experience working directly with Immunization Information Systems (IIS) or public health organizations.
Advanced knowledge of FHIR, including R5 adoption, Implementation Guides, CapabilityStatements, Profiles, Extensions, and Provenance.
Experience supporting IZ Gateway implementations and multi-jurisdictional healthcare data exchange.
Participation in HL7, FHIR, Connectathon, Testathon, or other interoperability standards organizations and working groups.
Experience using Power BI or similar analytics platforms to drive operational insights and decision-making.
Practical experience applying AI-assisted tools to standards analysis, HL7-to-FHIR mapping, requirements development, testing, or data quality initiatives.
A track record of influencing product strategy and driving interoperability best practices across complex healthcare technology environments.
