Remarkable people, trusted by clients to design and advance the world.
Wood is seeking expressions of interest for a Senior Instrument Designer to join our Malaysia team as we partner with a major player in the Oil & Gas industry on the FEED phase of one of the Middle East's most significant offshore redevelopment and asset life extension projects, encompassing both greenfield developments and brownfield modifications. This opportunity is available to Malaysian citizens and permanent residents on a 12-month fixed-term contract commencing in December 2026.
Designing the future. Transforming the World.
Wood has a deep history of pioneering technical expertise globally for more than 160 years, from the North Sea to the offshore fields of the Malay Basin, Sabah and Sarawak, and the world-class energy hubs of Kerteh and Pengerang, and is now embarking on an exciting new chapter. Building on decades of engineering excellence from Malaysia, Wood invites you to help shape the future of the energy industry across Asia Pacific and beyond.
Join us in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, one of Southeast Asia's leading business and energy centres, where global connectivity, cultural diversity and engineering excellence come together. Supporting industry-leading clients across the oil & gas, petrochemical, refining, chemicals and energy sectors, you will contribute to some of the world's most significant projects while enjoying the benefits of a modern, vibrant, and highly liveable city. From its iconic skyline and thriving international business community to its affordability, accessibility, and strategic position at the centre of Asia Pacific, Kuala Lumpur offers the perfect blend of career opportunity and lifestyle.
At Wood Malaysia, you will thrive in a collegiate and collaborative team culture, partnering with like-minded professionals to solve complex challenges, deliver technical excellence and create new possibilities for our clients and communities.
What we can offer
- Meaningful and complex projects delivered to leaders of industry across traditional, renewable, and emerging energy sectors
- Competitive salary with regular reviews to ensure we are rewarding at the right level in line with the market
- Global connections: join experts around the world who are at the leading edge of our industry, shaping the standards of our profession
- Flexible working arrangements balancing client, team, and individual needs
- Commitment to continuous professional development, with development plans tailored to your individual needs and aspirations
- Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion; across our business with employee networks committed to giving all employees a voice
- Commitment to your wellbeing through access to our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
Reporting to the Discipline Manager, you will step up and into a dedicated project team. You will thrive on the challenge of balancing technical, team, client, and project delivery by:
- Working across mature offshore oil and gas production facilities, with a focus on greenfield & brownfield engineering, asset integrity, redevelopment, and life extension
- Developing and producing instrumentation and control design deliverables including instrument layouts, cable routing drawings, junction box layouts, hook-up drawings, instrument installation details, cable schedules, loop drawings and associated design documentation
- Supporting the development and maintenance of 3D instrumentation models and participating in model reviews to ensure compliance with project and client requirements
- Representing the instrumentation design discipline in design reviews, HAZOPs, HazIDs and LOPA workshops as required
Your dual focus on relationships and delivery will be essential. Anticipating client needs beyond the immediate scope, you will contribute to technical excellence and quality on the instrumentation design portion of the project, while supporting effective multidisciplinary coordination. You will also work in close partnership with other disciplines and the client to enable robust technical decisions that ultimately add value to the client and asset portfolio.
You will bring to life Wood's three pillar strategy of Inspired Culture, Delivery Excellence and Profitable Growth on the project. Leading by example, you will consistently display and enforce Wood values and behaviours, and commitment to the highest standards of safe and ethical behaviour, to ensure safe, reliable operations and client satisfaction.
At Wood you will join an inclusive and diverse global community of inquisitive minds and recognised industry innovators, partnering to create new possibilities.
You must hold (or be eligible to obtain) legal working rights in Malaysia as either a Malaysian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
Suitably qualified in Instrumentation & Control Engineering, Instrument Design, Drafting or a related discipline from a recognised institution, ideally you will have proven experience working in a similar Senior Instrument Designer role, with relevant design engineering experience within Oil & Gas production and/or processing industries.
In addition, you will:
- Be recognized as an experienced Instrument Designer with extensive knowledge of instrumentation and control design principles, industry standards and drafting practices, with experience delivering within a challenging and complex multi-discipline environment.
- Have significant experience developing instrumentation design deliverables including instrument location plans, cable routing layouts, instrument installation details, junction box layouts, control system layouts, hook-up drawings, loop diagrams and associated design documentation.
- Have a professional level of knowledge of relevant regulatory framework and legislation with an ability to apply relevant technical practices, codes, and standards.
- Be highly proficient in AutoCAD and MicroStation for the preparation of 2D instrumentation and control design deliverables.
- Have hands-on experience using 3D design and modelling applications including SmartPlant 3D (SP3D), AVEVA E3D, PDS, PDMS and other AVEVA software platforms for multidisciplinary design coordination and model reviews.
- Be commercially astute with a “solutions mindset”, skilled in the management of risk during the design process consistent with safety, technical and commercial requirements.
- Be an articulate communicator (both written and verbal) including well-developed technical report writing and professional presentation skills.
Have excellent knowledge of MS Office applications, spreadsheets, and instrumentation design software.
What will set you apart will be your previous instrumentation design experience for major offshore greenfield & brownfield Oil & Gas projects. Exposure to projects in the Middle East is advantageous but not essential.
It takes a diverse and inclusive community of inquisitive minds to unlock tomorrow's solutions to the world's most critical challenges.
