About Backbone
Backbone is a marketing agency that brings an expedition mindset to partnerships and brand growth in the outdoor and active lifestyle world. Since 1997, we've grown from a two-person PR shop in Carbondale, Colorado into an integrated team spanning PR, paid media, affiliate, influencer, search, social, and creative. We work hybrid from Carbondale and Denver, with teammates remote across the country. We live our clients' brands as end users, we take the work seriously (not ourselves), and we care about doing it with style.
The role
This isn't a traffic-cop project management role. We're looking for an operator: an account strategist who keeps PR, affiliate, influencer, AEO/SEO, and paid media moving in sync, brings a strong point of view to the work, and protects account profitability while doing it.
This person will be who the client calls first and the person our channel teams lean on to see the whole picture. They carry the account's history, know what each client stakeholder needs to hear before a channel team walks into the room, and can turn five channels of data into one clear story with next steps. This person will raise the bar: own cross-channel QA, break down silos, and jump in wherever the account needs so nothing reaches the client that isn't accurate and ready.
If you like being trusted with the big picture and the details at the same time, this is that job.
What you'll do
Own the client relationship day to day:
Serve as the primary day-to-day contact for the client, building trust with stakeholders from brand and marketing leads to cross-functional partners.
Run recurring client meetings: set agendas, drive decisions, capture actions, and follow through.
Carry the account's institutional knowledge: past campaigns, what's worked, what hasn't, and why.
Prep channel teams before they present. Know what each client stakeholder cares about, and make sure every presentation lands on their priorities.
Read the room. Spot risks, shifting priorities, and growth opportunities early, and bring a plan to account leadership.
Connect the dots across channels:
Keep PR, affiliate, influencer, AEO/SEO, and paid media aligned to one plan, one calendar, and one set of business goals.
Own integrated account results: turn channel data into a single story (what happened, why it matters, and what we do next), then drive optimizations and pivots with channel leads.
Co-lead quarterly business reviews (QBRs) and monthly reporting with [account lead / title], owning the narrative and recommendations.
Bring a strategic point of view to planning. Stay ahead of the client’s competitive landscape, challenge the brief when it needs it, and propose integrated ideas that make each channel work harder.
Identify where one channel's win can fuel another, like earned coverage that feeds affiliate, creator content that feeds paid, or PR that strengthens search and AI visibility.
Raise the bar on quality
Own cross-channel QA so every deliverable is accurate, on brand, and client ready before it goes out.
Break down silos between channel teams. Create the rhythms, docs, and handoffs that keep everyone working from the same information.
Be the Swiss Army Knife: jump in to fill gaps, whether that's tightening a deck, pressure-testing numbers, or drafting a recap.
Hold the team to clear timelines and standards, and flag issues before they become client problems.
Protect account health and profitability
Track hours and budget against the SOW, flag scope creep early, and bring a recommended path to account leadership.
Give finance and account leadership input on forecasting, staffing needs, and margin, drawing on what you see day to day.
Spot growth opportunities for the client across Backbone’s channels and departments, and help account leadership shape proposals for expanded scope.
Use project management tools (we use Asana) to keep timelines, resourcing, and approvals visible.
What you bring
5-7 years of agency experience in account management or client service, with at least 2–3 years leading integrated, multi-channel accounts.
Working fluency in at least three of PR, influencer, affiliate, SEO/AEO, and paid media, and a fast learner on the rest.
A track record of owning senior client relationships and being the trusted voice in the room.
Strong analytical chops: you can read channel reports, find the signal, and turn it into a clear story and recommendation.
Experience building workflows, shared calendars, and QA processes that keep multiple teams in sync.
Clear, plain-spoken writing and presenting, with a track record of building QBRs, monthly reports, and recommendations, and running decision-focused client meetings.
A sharp eye for detail and a real sense of ownership over quality.
Solid grasp of agency financials: scope, SOWs, hours, budgets, and margin. Confidence to push back with a point of view, including on scope and budget, paired with the humility to listen and adjust.
Confidence to push back with a point of view, paired with the humility to listen and adjust.
Proven ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams without direct authority, and to hold peers to standards and timelines.
Coach and mentor junior team members across channels on client service and quality standards.
Clear, plain-spoken writing and presenting.
Strong working skills in PowerPoint and Excel, plus comfort with project management tools (Asana preferred) and reporting platforms, and thoughtful use of AI tools to speed up reporting, QA, and synthesis.
Bonus points
Experience with outdoor, active lifestyle, wellness, or travel brands, or you live these categories yourself, so you can quickly get to know a client’s category, competitors, and customers.
Hands-on familiarity with affiliate platforms (Impact, AvantLink, ShareASale), influencer tools, or SEO/AI search tools.
Experience growing an account's scope through organic upsell.
What success looks like
Timeframe:
30 days: You know the account's history, goals, SOW, and stakeholders. You've met every channel lead and are running client meetings.
60 days: You're the client's go-to contact. You've co-led a monthly report and put a cross-channel QA process in place.
90 days: You've co-led a QBR with an integrated narrative and clear next steps. Channel teams are working from one shared plan and calendar.
12 months: Client satisfaction is strong and the relationship is stable. The account is on or above margin targets, and you've helped identify at least one growth opportunity.
