The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Developer to support a significant capacity management and automation initiative within a government environment.

Working closely with Senior Capacity Managers, the Capacity Planning Services team and key project stakeholders, you will contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of the COMPASS Capacity Management Information System (CMIS).

The focus of the role is to design, develop, test and support enhancements that enable improved capacity monitoring, data collection, analysis and reporting. This includes supporting CPU right-sizing initiatives and broader capacity management automation outcomes.

You will provide specialist Java development capability across the COMPASS application, data collectors, database interfaces, data structures, dashboards and reporting functionality, helping transform platform utilisation data into meaningful insights for operational decision-making.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior developer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, working across enterprise platforms and contributing to automation and operational improvement within a large-scale environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Java Development: Develop, enhance and maintain COMPASS Java application components, including data collectors, APIs, processing logic and interfaces supporting capacity data ingestion and analysis.
  • Data Integration: Implement and test data collection methods across priority platforms, integrating feeds from monitoring tools, configuration repositories and other platform data sources.
  • Database Development: Support the design and implementation of data aggregation, transformation and storage solutions within COMPASS and PostgreSQL to enable reliable reporting and forecasting.
  • Dashboards & Reporting: Contribute to Grafana dashboards and reporting capabilities by developing data structures, queries, extracts and application functionality to support CPU right-sizing analysis.
  • Automation: Develop and maintain automation scripts, data collectors, scheduled jobs and repeatable deployment and operational processes.
  • Testing & Troubleshooting: Investigate defects, undertake root cause analysis, implement remediation and support releases across development, pre-production and production environments.
  • Technical Documentation: Prepare and maintain technical designs, task cards, implementation notes, support documentation and knowledge transfer materials.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with capacity planners, platform teams, database administrators, Linux engineers, project delivery teams and business stakeholders to understand requirements and validate outcomes.
  • Operational Improvement: Support the broader Service Management & Self-Healing Automation Project, contributing to CPU right-sizing, automated capacity reporting, improved data quality, expanded platform coverage and operational self-service reporting.

Technical Skills & Experience

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Strong experience in Java application development, including designing, building, enhancing and maintaining enterprise applications.
  • Experience developing and supporting APIs, application interfaces, data processing components and integration services.
  • Experience working with PostgreSQL or equivalent relational database technologies, including database design, SQL queries and data management.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating monitoring, capacity or observability data from tools such as Grafana, Elastic, Prometheus, VMware Aria, Dynatrace or equivalent platforms.
  • Experience developing automation scripts, data collectors, scheduled jobs and repeatable deployment or operational processes.
  • An understanding of data aggregation, transformation and reporting to support operational analysis and decision-making.
  • Experience supporting application testing, troubleshooting, defect resolution and production releases.
  • Strong technical documentation skills, including the ability to produce technical designs, implementation instructions, support arrangements and knowledge transfer material.

What We're Looking For

You will be a senior-level software engineer who can work autonomously, take ownership of technical deliverables and provide guidance and technical leadership where required.

You will also demonstrate:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • The ability to work collaboratively across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • A practical, solutions-focused approach to complex technical challenges.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver outcomes in a structured project environment.
  • A commitment to knowledge sharing and building sustainable technical capability.

Contract Details

  • Estimated commencement: Monday, 11 January 2027.
  • Initial contract duration: Up to 12 months.
  • Potential extensions: Up to a maximum total term of 24 months.
  • Location: ACT.
  • Working arrangements: Hybrid.
  • Security: Must be eligible and able to obtain Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) security clearance.

Interested?

If you have strong Java development experience and are interested in contributing to a large-scale capacity management and automation initiative, we'd love to hear from you.
