Job Description – Senior Lighting Design Engineer
Company: Urbio - Leading Smart Street Lighting Manufacturing Company in Eastern Europe
Location: Remote, based in Romania - full-time role covering projects across Europe, with occasional travel to clients, design partners and our factory in Moreni
Department: Product & Technical Design — International Projects
Reports To: Chief Product Officer
About Urbio
Urbio is a leading European manufacturer of smart street lighting solutions, with over 3,000 successful projects delivered across Romania, Moldova, Serbia and Montenegro.
We specialise in highly certified, energy-efficient smart luminaires natively integrated with our ecosystem of solutions, including:
- An AI-powered smart city platform for asset and lighting management;
- Advanced controllers, sensors, and smart accessories;
- A wide range of communication protocols, including PLC, LoRa, and GSM.
As we expand into new international markets, the quality of every project starts long before installation — it starts with the design. We are looking for a senior, hands-on lighting engineer to own the technical design of projects built around Urbio’s products, so that what gets specified, tendered and installed is correct, complete and the right solution for the client.
Role Overview
The Senior Lighting Design Engineer is the technical authority on project design at Urbio, with a primary focus on international projects. You set the direction of each project through the design brief, guide and train the external design firms we work with, and review their work until it is technically sound and fully aligned with our products and solutions.
Many municipalities prepare their lighting designs through in-house staff or local consultants who are not lighting specialists. Your role is to bridge that gap: verify the specifications, catch errors and omissions early, and make sure each design answers the real technical question — which products are right for the site, how they are powered and controlled, and how the system will perform once installed.
You work across both existing products and those still in development, ensuring that designs are correct, complete and built around the Urbio ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities:
Design briefs & technical direction
- Create the design brief (temă de proiectare) for each project: scope, structure and direction of the design, performance targets, and the Urbio products and solutions to be implemented.
- Translate client and tender requirements into the right technical answer - luminaire selection and configuration, power supply concept, control and communication architecture (PLC, LoRa, GSM) and smart-city platform integration.
- Define dimming / adaptive-lighting profiles and control obtrusive light and light pollution, in line with dark-sky requirements in markets such as Spain.
- Support Sales/Bid with technical input for international tenders, clarifications and pre-sales design questions.
Training & support for external designers
- Onboard and train the design firms we partner with on Urbio’s portfolio, photometric data, design guidelines and the standards we work to.
- Act as the go-to technical contact for external designers throughout the project: answering questions, providing product information and guiding design decisions.
- Train and technically support Urbio’s local market agents or partners (e.g. Spain, Greece): equip them to read and verify lighting audits (incl. EN 13201-4 field measurement), select the right luminaire and control solution and present it correctly to the authority.
- Build and maintain the design toolkit: guidelines, checklists, templates, product and photometric libraries (IES/LDT), and typical details for reuse across projects.
Design review & quality control
- Review and approve the work of external designers: lighting calculations (DIALux/Relux) against EN 13201 and local requirements, luminaire choice, electrical design (supply, cable sizing, voltage drop, protection, earthing, distribution cabinets) and drawings.
- Verify design specifications prepared by or for municipalities, flag errors, gaps and non-compliant requirements, and ensure they are technically correct and compatible with Urbio solutions.
- Check consistency between design, BOQ and technical specification, so projects hand over cleanly to Delivery/PMO with no surprises in the field.
- Issue clear, documented review comments and track them to closure before a design is signed off.
- Support commissioning and project acceptance: configuration and validation of the smart platform, controllers and sensors, and the related validation tests.
Product & standards
- Feed field and design insights into product development, and prepare design documentation and guidance for new products as they are launched.
- Stay current on European and national standards, energy-efficiency requirements and grid/utility practices in our target markets, and keep internal guidelines up to date.
- Raise the overall design standard across Urbio - internally and with partners - so every project is technically correct and complete.
Required Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent); specialisation in lighting engineering is a strong plus.
- Proven experience in lighting design, ideally public/street lighting, with a solid understanding of lighting principles, photometry and road lighting classes.
- Strong working knowledge of EN 13201 and related European standards for public lighting and low-voltage installations.
- Hands-on experience with lighting calculation software (DIALux evo and/or Relux) and AutoCAD.
- Solid grasp of electrical design for lighting networks: power supply, cabling, protection and control.
- Very good English, written and spoken (C1 or above). Greek or Spanish is a big plus.
- Based in Romania; able to work remotely and travel occasionally across Europe.
Ideal Candidate
- A rigorous reviewer - spots what is missing or wrong in a design, explains why and offers alternative solutions.
- A natural trainer and guide, patient with non-specialists and credible with experienced designers.
- Firm on technical correctness, diplomatic in how feedback is delivered to partners and clients.
- Familiar with smart lighting, controls and IoT communication (PLC, LoRa, GSM, DALI/NEMA/Zhaga interfaces).
- Self-organised and comfortable working remotely across countries, languages and time-bound tender deadlines.
- Structured in documentation - guidelines, checklists and templates that others can actually use.
- A network of project designers / engineering firms and consultants in lighting is a huge plus
Support You'll Have
You will work closely with Sales/Bid, the Delivery/PMO team, Product Development and the Factory, with direct access to leadership. You’ll have the full Urbio product documentation and photometric data at hand, and the autonomy to shape how design is done across the company and its partner network.
What We Offer
- Ownership of technical design across international smart-lighting projects.
- A key voice in how our current and future products are specified and designed into projects.
- 100% remote, full-time role, with travel across Europe.
- Competitive compensation package.
- A growing, international company with an established track record across Romania, Moldova, Serbia and Montenegro and recently opened new markets in Spain and Greece.
You’ll be joining a team of engaged, capable colleagues who take real pride in what we build - people who care about getting the details right and are always looking to sharpen our processes so that every project lands on time and exactly as promised to our clients.
If you want to be the person who makes sure every project is designed right from the start, we would be happy to meet you!
