SUMMARY
Leads the end-to-end accounting and reporting function for producer commission activity. Oversees daily accounting operations, the preparation of financial information, and monthly close and reporting deadlines, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of Alliant's financial results. Working closely with Divisional Controllers, Producers, Sales leaders, and Legal, this role ensures contracts are interpreted and applied appropriately and commissions are calculated accurately. Ensures the team follows Alliant policies and procedures while adapting processes to support growth, and is responsible for staff supervision, performance reviews, development, and training.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Own the monthly (and any interim) producer commission calculation process from data intake through final payment file.
Prepare and distribute commission statements/calculations directly to producers, fielding and resolving questions.
Maintain and update commission calculation models, schedules, and tools to reflect current contract terms.
Review new, amended, and acquired producer contracts to ensure commission terms are accurately reflected in calculation logic and systems.
Work with Legal to resolve contract interpretation questions, disputes, and amendments affecting commissions.
Analyze commission expense trends and reasonableness, including production levels, rates, and payouts; investigate and resolve variances.
Develop and maintain review procedures and supporting documentation that meet audit and internal control requirements.
Reconcile commission accruals and payables each month.
Identify, develop, and implement process improvements and automation opportunities in commission workflows and accounting operations.
Oversee the maintenance and development of financial reporting and month-end close processes.
Support monthly financial statement close and maintain related schedules.
Prepare monthly commission reporting and analysis for the Divisional Controller and senior finance leaders, including variance commentary.
Lead commission integration activities related to acquisitions.
Review acquired producer contracts and payment schedules, along with legacy calculation methods while maintaining controls and payment continuity.
Support internal and external audit requests related to commission accounting.
Collaborate with internal partners to address accounting, reporting, and operational needs.
Manage the Accounting team’s daily activities and ensure deadlines are met.
Manage staff by motivating/mentoring staff, providing employee training and development, conducting performance reviews, and performing disciplinary action as appropriate.
Performs all duties in accordance with all company policies and procedures, and all federal, state and local laws, wherein the Company operates.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Seven (7) or more years of progressive accounting experience
Insurance, financial services, or producer/broker-based industry experience
Experience with commissions, incentive compensation, or sales compensation accounting
Experience reviewing and interpreting contracts or commission agreements
Experience working in a rapidly growing organization and improving processes to support scale and efficiency
SKILLS
Solid understanding of GAAP
Proficient with Microsoft Office, especially Excel
Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem solving skills
Demonstrated team management and mentoring skills and the ability to keep staff focused, accountable, and on track
Excellent communication skills and able to communicate directly with leadership
Ability to manage competing monthly deadlines
Ability to explain calculations clearly to producers and outside brokers and collaborate with Legal and Controllership
