The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
About the Role, Mission or Department Overview
The New York Times is looking for a strategic, analytical marketer to help improve how AI-generated answers represent our brand, products, subscription value, pricing and customer experience.
In this role, you will build an ongoing understanding of the commercial questions people ask AI systems, the sources shaping their answers, and opportunities to improve the visibility and accuracy of our information. You will identify where to focus, guide experiments, measure results, and turn what you learn into practical recommendations for product marketers and the teams that own or oversee relevant consumer-facing surfaces.
This role sits within the enterprise Marketing team and partners closely with cross-functional colleagues across teams, including Product, Growth, Audience, Communications and Customer Care. It is a full-time, hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters. You are expected to come into the office 3 days per week.
Responsibilities
- Monitor how AI systems answer commercially important consumer questions about The New York Times, including questions about our brand, products, subscription value, pricing and customer experience.
- Prioritize topics and opportunities based on their strategic importance to the business.
- Identify the sources shaping AI-generated answers and diagnose gaps in how our brand and commercial value are represented.
- Recommend experiments to improve the visibility and accuracy of AI answers, guide their execution with partners, and measure whether interventions are effective.
- Translate research and monitoring into clear, actionable guidance for product marketers, who coordinate follow-up with the teams that own relevant surfaces.
- Partner with product marketers and relevant teams to improve messaging and content, and help ensure public, commercial New York Times pages can be retrieved and used effectively as sources in AI-generated answers.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of the value of journalistic independence, and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
Basic Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in SEO measurement, marketing, digital strategy, consumer insights, analytics or a related field. Enough technical SEO literacy to tell a crawler or indexing problem from a messaging problem.
- Experience researching consumer questions, monitoring how a brand or product is represented and perceived, and synthesizing findings into actionable recommendations.
- Experience designing experiments, estimating impact, evaluating results, and using evidence to recommend next steps. Direct exposure to AI-search measurement, such as designing a prompt set, auditing citations, comparing engines or running an experiment.
- Strong commercial judgment about which prompts and answer frames matter to subscription and product decisions.
- Experience translating strategy to technical implications, and explaining complex or technical findings clearly to different audiences and turning analysis into recommendations other teams could use.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Peec, Profound or another visibility platform.
- Experience marketing consumer products, subscriptions or digital content.
- Familiarity with teams and consumer-facing surfaces—owned or earned—that help market or educate consumers about a brand, product, subscription, or customer experience.
