Role Description
Engineering leadership is shifting from coordinating a team to owning the judgment behind a team that blends human and agent work. Hands-on technical credibility now carries as much weight as coordination skill.
The Senior Manager, Engineering scales delivery and technical standards across a function, staying grounded as a technical partner, through code review, architecture discussions, and firsthand use of the team's tools, to be a true resource for the engineers on your team. Standards get set from direct experience and are built on the belief that engineering fundamentals matter even more now that agents handle more of the typing. You'll own a credible, function-wide accounting of what AI adoption is actually contributing, in specific and defensible terms, and you'll be the one who spots where agents open up new possibilities for the function beyond speeding up its existing work.
You'll do this across a mix of workstreams at different stages of maturity, some established and steady, others new and still finding their shape, which means adapting your approach as priorities and requirements shift. You'll work in close partnership with the embedded Product Managers on your pod, co-owning not just execution but the judgment behind what gets built and why.
Location
This position is open to remote candidates eligible to work in the United States. A hybrid schedule is available for candidates based near our Concord, MA office. Candidates outside the Concord area will complete initial onboarding in Concord, with occasional in-office visits and travel for company events.
What You'll Do
Technical Leadership and Hands-On Credibility
- Success criteria: A function led by someone with real, current technical judgment built firsthand.
- Stay hands-on with the underlying systems and AI-assisted workflows, through code review, architecture discussions, and direct use of the team's tools - standards come from direct experience.
- Establish technical delivery standards for the function grounded in strong engineering fundamentals, the same fundamentals that matter even more once agents are doing more of the typing.
- Serve as a reliable technical partner and escalation point for the engineers on your team, close enough to the details to have a real opinion.
- Success criteria: Measurable business results, reported honestly, with a real map of where the tools actually help.
- Own your function's contribution to the org's AI value narrative, capacity created and cost avoided, in specific, defensible terms that hold up to scrutiny.
- Stay far enough ahead of the work to see risks coming before they land, and close enough to it to take the reins personally when a situation calls for it. Resolve broad, cross-team challenges, including when two teams' approaches to agent-assisted work don't line up.
- Move fluidly across workstreams with different levels of maturity and risk, adjusting your approach as requirements shift based on what testing and real-world use reveal.
- Look for where agents open up new possibilities for the function to pursue beyond speeding up its existing work.
- Success criteria: A pipeline that keeps producing strong managers and senior engineers.
- Build the leadership pipeline for your function with a clear view of what makes a strong future Engineering Manager now that agents handle more routine execution work.
- Treat testing new AI tools and workflows as a standing, ongoing practice across the function.
- Drive hiring, performance management, and career development across your function.
- Thoughtfully allocate engineers across workstreams, and set up pairing and mentorship structures that accelerate growth and keep skills sharp across the team.
- Success criteria: Consistent standards across teams, and a technical partner leadership can trust.
- Set a consistent bar across your pod for what good agent-assisted work looks like.
- Lead project planning and capacity forecasting across teams, while staying close enough to the details to be a reliable escalation point when something goes wrong.
- Co-own process and outcomes with the embedded Product Managers on your pod, not just execution, but shaping what gets built and why, while partnering with Data to turn delivery gains into measurable business results.
- Proven Management Expertise: 6+ years managing software engineering teams, including 2+ years managing managers or senior technical leads, in a cloud-based SaaS environment (Ruby on Rails, React, MySQL/PostgreSQL, or comparable stack).
- Technical Credibility Grounded in Fundamentals: Genuinely hands-on: comfortable reviewing code, discussing architecture, and using the team's own tools, including AI-assisted workflows, well enough to set standards from direct, firsthand experience.
- AI Capability Mapping: Can speak concretely to what your function's AI tooling is actually good at versus where it needs a heavier hand, rather than treating AI adoption as evenly beneficial across every task.
- Metrics Literacy Beyond Output Volume: Understands why PR count or lines shipped can mislead, and speaks fluently to cycle time, escaped defects, and review capacity as the real constraints.
- Leadership Pipeline Builder: Track record of developing managers or senior engineers, with a clear point of view on how career growth changes as AI absorbs more routine execution work.
- Strong Communicator: Comfortable presenting metrics, tradeoffs, and honest gaps to senior leadership and cross-functional partners alike.
- Direct experience working with or leading teams through AI-assisted or spec-driven delivery practices at the management level.
- Experience in multi-tenant SaaS, ideally in hospitality, events, or another vertical SaaS category.
- Familiarity with eval frameworks or quality benchmarking for AI-generated code.
- Experience partnering with Security and Compliance on governance for automated or agent-driven systems.
The salary for this role is $180,000 to $220,000 annually. Compensation is based on a variety of factors including relevant experience, technical skill set, AI development fluency, and geographic location, in alignment with our internal compensation framework. This role is also eligible for additional benefits and incentives.
