About Branch
Branch is on a mission to make insurance more accessible, so more people can be covered. We innovate using data, tech, and automation to simplify insurance from start to finish—we eliminated inaccurate quotes in favor of real prices, created a better way to bundle, and cut unnecessary costs in the traditional insurance process. Then we pass those savings along to our members. Basically, we’re doing insurance the way it was meant to be.
But we didn’t just create the insurance we’ve always wanted, we also created the company we’ve always wanted to work for. As we redefine insurance, we also want to redefine what it means to work in insurance. Find out for yourself.
Branch has a preference for candidates in Ohio, but is open to candidates located in AZ, FL, GA, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, MD, MI, MO, NV, NC, OH, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, and WI. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.
Branch is remote first, with most Branchers choosing to work from home. Our headquarters are located in Columbus, Ohio, where we come together from time to time to build relationships and connect with each other in real life. We also have office space in Columbia and Concordia, Missouri as well as Forreston, Illinois. Once a year, the entire company gathers for “BranchFest”, a highlight of the year for many Branchers.
About the Role
Branch is a digital insurance company that makes home, auto, renters, and umbrella coverage simpler and more affordable. The laws and regulations that govern insurance shape nearly everything about how we build products, price them, and bring them to customers, so our ability to grow depends on understanding that landscape and helping shape it.
We’re looking for a Senior Manager, Government Affairs and Regulatory Policy to help protect and grow Branch’s business by staying ahead of legislation and regulation that affects how we operate, and by building the relationships that let us influence it. Reporting to the Vice President, Head of Legal and Government Affairs, you’ll work closely with Branch’s legal, product, and compliance teams to make sure regulatory developments are understood early and factored into business decisions. This is an individual contributor role. You won’t manage people, though you may direct outside lobbyists or consultants when it makes sense.
You’ll have real autonomy in this seat. You’ll build Branch’s regulatory strategy, meet directly with regulators in the states where we operate, and represent Branch at national industry meetings.
Key Responsibilities
Track legislation, rulemaking, and market-conduct developments that could affect Branch’s ability to operate and grow, and help the business get ahead of them.
Build direct relationships with regulators, legislators, legislative staff, and trade associations who shape the rules Branch and its affiliates operate under.
Plan and lead proactive outreach to state insurance regulators on new products and lines of business, including which states to engage, who to meet, what to present, and how to follow up.
Represent Branch and its affiliates in industry coalitions and working groups, and help shape the positions Branch takes on pending legislation and regulation.
Read proposed and enacted laws and regulations, and translate them into clear, practical guidance for Branch’s legal, product, underwriting, compliance, and claims teams.
Write comment letters, position papers, and testimony, and present Branch’s positions in regulatory and legislative settings.
Support the product team’s rate, form, and regulatory filings by explaining the legislative and regulatory landscape behind them, joining regulator calls, and tracking where each state stands.
Register as a lobbyist where required, and stay current on lobbying and ethics rules.
Manage any outside lobbyists, consultants, or advisers brought on to support specific issues or markets.
Flag regulatory risks and opportunities to the Head of Legal and Government Affairs and other senior leaders, framed in terms of what they mean for the business.
Travel to national industry meetings, conferences, and state insurance departments to meet with regulators, legislators, and industry partners.
Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
About 5 years of experience in government affairs, regulatory affairs, public policy, legislative affairs, or something closely related.
A track record of owning a regulatory or legislative portfolio on your own, with real business stakes attached to it.
Solid understanding of how legislatures and regulatory agencies work, including rulemaking.
Strong writing and speaking skills. You can draft a comment letter, deliver testimony, and brief an executive just as easily.
A knack for building relationships with regulators, legislators, and trade groups across the political spectrum.
Willingness to register as a lobbyist where required and to travel when the job calls for it.
Insurance industry experience is a plus, especially relationships with regulators and work on rate, form, or regulatory advocacy.
Experience at a state department of insurance or another state agency is a plus.
Familiarity with personal lines property and casualty insurance is a plus.
Experience advising product, underwriting, or compliance teams on regulatory issues is a plus.
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; a law degree or a policy-related graduate degree is a plus.
