Position Summary
The Senior Manager of Strategy is a hands-on strategy leader and enterprise utility player. This individual helps IH&S make clear choices and convert them into results, combining fact-based strategy formulation with direct ownership of selected execution priorities. The role requires the ability to influence without authority across businesses, functions and geographies.
Reporting to the VP Business Development, the Senior Manager of Strategy formulates and executes the segment strategy, supports portfolio and resource-allocation choices, and accelerates a focused set of organic and inorganic growth priorities. This person works closely with the GMs of optics & fluidics businesses, commercial leaders, Finance, Corporate Development, and functional partners.
This is a builder-doer role and is expected to develop the market-backed point of view, build the business case, align stakeholders, create the workplan, and remain involved through implementation. Success depends less on formal authority and more on analytical credibility, sound judgment, strong relationships, and consistent follow-through.
What’s Unique and Exciting About this Role:
- Entrepreneurial environment with strategy as a critical role.
- Opportunity to shape where IH&S plays, how it wins and how resources are deployed.
- Direct ownership of strategy work products and selected execution priorities.
- Broad exposure across markets, customers, technologies, businesses and enterprise leaders.
- High autonomy in a matrixed environment, with impact created through influence, facts and follow-through.
- Utility-player mandate spanning market analysis, executive alignment, initiative leadership, M&A support and operating cadence.
Key Responsibilities
- Formulate differentiated strategies. Develop fact-based segment, platform and business strategies, in collaboration with the VP GMs for each business, grounded in market, customer, competitor, technology and financial insight. Translate analysis into explicit where-to-play, how-to-win, capability, and resource-allocation of choices.
- Turn strategy into execution. Convert strategic priorities into sequenced workplans, accountable owners, milestones, KPIs, and value targets. Personally lead selected cross-business initiatives from definition through implementation rather than handing off the work after the recommendation.
- Drive cross-business growth. Identify and advance opportunities that can drive growth for IH&S through connected capabilities across HST, channel access, customer relationships, or coordinated commercial action. Build the case, align stakeholders, resolve barriers, and maintain momentum.
- Support portfolio and M&A decisions. Shape target themes, screen opportunities, develop strategic rationales and business cases, and partner with Corporate Development and business leaders through cultivation, diligence, deal evaluation and integration planning.
- Build external and competitive insights. Create a practical market-intelligence rhythm that identifies shifts in customer needs, technology, competition, regulation, and capital deployment. Distill implications for leadership decisions and strategic priorities to share externally with investor community
- Establish performance visibility. Define leading and lagging indicators for top strategic initiatives. Build simple mechanisms to track value creation, surface gaps early, and drive corrective action.
- Enable leadership decisions. Structure ambiguous questions, develop decision-ready options, and facilitate productive debate. Prepare clear executive narratives, presentations, and recommendations for segment and enterprise leadership.
- Strengthen strategic capability. Develop reusable tools, standard work and problem-solving approaches that improve strategic thinking and execution across IH&S. Coach teams through the work while remaining directly engaged in the analysis and output.
- Serve as a utility player. Step into critical, time-sensitive work that may not fit neatly within one function. Rapidly learn about the issue, create structure, mobilize the right people, and deliver a practical outcome.
How Success Will Be Measured
- Quality, clarity and adoption of IH&S strategic choices across businesses and functions.
- Measurable revenue, margin, cash or enterprise-value impact from initiatives personally led or enabled.
- Speed and quality of execution against agreed milestones, with risks surfaced and resolved early.
- Strength and strategic fit of the organic and inorganic growth pipeline.
- Effectiveness in aligning stakeholders and advancing work without relying on formal authority.
- Improved strategic capability, standard work and decision quality across the segment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business, Engineering, Economics, Science or a related field; MBA or relevant advanced degree preferred.
- Approximately 8–12+ years of progressive experience in strategy, general management, commercial leadership, corporate development, transformation, or a related role.
- Demonstrated experience both formulating strategy and executing it through measurable business outcomes.
- Background in health and science technology, health and science markets, manufacturing or another complex B2B environment strongly preferred.
- Experience in a top-tier strategy consulting environment and/or a high-impact corporate strategy role is helpful but must be paired with evidence of hands-on implementation.
- Experience building market-backed growth strategies, business cases, and executive recommendations using financial, commercial and operational data.
- Working knowledge of M&A strategy, target assessment, diligence and integration planning; direct transaction experience is a plus.
- ·Track record of influencing senior leaders and cross-functional teams in a matrixed, global organization without direct reporting authority.
Attributes & Skills
- Doer first: rolls up sleeves, builds the analysis, drafts the recommendation and stays involved through implementation.
- Utility player who moves easily across strategic, commercial, financial, operational and organizational questions.
- Influencer without authority who builds alignment through facts, trust, listening and clear trade-offs.
- Strategy-to-results operator who connects long-term direction to near-term actions, owners, milestones and economics.
- Structured problem solver who simplifies complexity and separates signal from noise.
- Commercially and financially fluent, with a practical understanding of markets, customer value, margins, returns and risk.
- Low ego and high accountability; shares credit, invites challenge and takes ownership for outcomes.
- Clear, concise communicator who produces decision-ready narratives for business teams and senior executives.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and able to create direction as facts evolve.
- Curious and externally oriented, with the ability to find and evaluate credible market intelligence.
What This Role Is Not
- A staff role focused only on presentations, annual planning or coordinating others’ work.
- A pure advisory position that ends when the recommendation is delivered.
- A role that depends on positional authority to create action.
- A narrowly defined functional job; priorities will shift as the business and strategy evolve.
