Show job description

Hi, we're Oscar. We're hiring a Senior Market Researcher, Insurance Product & Marketing to join our Insights & Analytics team.

Oscar is the first health insurance company built around a full stack technology platform and a relentless focus on serving our members. We started Oscar in 2012 to create the kind of health insurance company we would want for ourselves—one that behaves like a doctor in the family.

About the role:

Oscar is building a centralized Insights and Analytics function within our Technology organization, bringing together User Research, Data Science, Analytics, and Market Research to strengthen how the company learns, makes decisions, and builds. As a Senior Market Researcher on this team, you will independently lead research that deepens our understanding of consumers, market dynamics, and the competitive landscape. Your work will uncover the needs, attitudes, preferences, and decision drivers that shape how people evaluate, choose, and stay with health insurance—helping Oscar make informed decisions about growth, positioning, and insurance products.

You will partner closely with Marketing, Strategy, Insurance Product, Product, User Research, Data Science, and Analytics to translate business questions into focused research and actionable recommendations. This role is well suited to a hands-on researcher who combines strong quantitative skills with qualitative curiosity, manages projects from scoping through delivery, and connects findings to clear business implications. You will also contribute to how market research is documented, shared, and reused across Oscar.

You will report into the Vice President, Insights & Analytics.

Work Location: This position is based in our New York City office, requiring a hybrid work schedule with 3 days of in-office work per week. Thursdays are a required in-office day for team meetings and events, while your other two office days are flexible to suit your schedule.

Pay Transparency: The base pay for this role is: $163,944.00 - $215,176.50 per year. You are also eligible for employee benefits, participation in Oscar's unlimited vacation program, company equity grants and annual performance bonuses.

Responsibilities:

  • Independently lead market research projects from scoping and study design through questionnaire or discussion guide development, fieldwork, analysis, synthesis, and presentation.
  • Partner with stakeholders to clarify business questions, identify the decisions research should inform, and agree on scope, methods, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Conduct research with consumers, prospective and current members, and brokers to understand market needs, audience segments, purchase drivers, barriers to enrollment, and reasons for retention or switching.
  • Design and execute quantitative and qualitative studies, including surveys, interviews, concept and message testing, and brand and consideration research.
  • Support audience segmentation and market opportunity assessments by combining primary research with secondary sources and internal data.
  • Track competitor offerings, positioning, and consumer trends, translating relevant developments into implications for Oscar.
  • Partner with User Research, Data Science, and Analytics to connect market attitudes and stated preferences with observed behaviors and business performance.
  • Deliver clear recommendations that inform audience prioritization, value propositions, marketing strategy, and insurance product development; communicate methodological limitations and uncertainty.
  • Manage research vendors and panel providers for assigned projects, including briefs, sampling requirements, data quality, timelines, and budgets.
  • Contribute to shared research tools, repositories, and repeatable approaches; share methods and provide feedback to colleagues where appropriate.
  • Use AI-enabled tools thoughtfully to support research efficiency and knowledge reuse while maintaining human oversight, analytical rigor, privacy, and compliance.
  • Apply ethical and inclusive research practices, including appropriate consent, accessible participation, and consideration of underrepresented and hard-to-reach audiences.
  • Comply with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in market research, consumer insights, or a closely related applied research field.
  • Experience independently delivering research projects involving multiple stakeholders, from business question through actionable recommendations.
  • Strong quantitative research skills, including questionnaire design, sampling, data quality assessment, and analysis and interpretation of survey results.
  • Experience applying qualitative methods to understand consumer motivations and explain quantitative findings.
  • Experience conducting research that informs marketing, positioning, audience strategy, or product decisions.
  • Ability to combine primary research, secondary sources, and internal data into a coherent, evidence-based point of view.
  • Experience using survey platforms and analytical tools to work directly with research data.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting findings and recommendations to non-research audiences.
  • Ability to manage competing project priorities and work within ethical, privacy, compliance, and operational constraints.

Bonus points

  • Experience in healthcare, health insurance, benefits, financial services, or another regulated industry.
  • Experience researching insurance purchasing journeys or working with consumers, members, and brokers in a B2B2C environment.
  • Experience with segmentation, brand tracking, market sizing, or choice-based research methods such as conjoint or MaxDiff.
  • Experience managing external research agencies, panel providers, or syndicated research resources.
  • Education or training in market research, marketing, psychology, sociology, economics, statistics, or a related field.
