We are currently looking for Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical design and engineering of retrofit and retro-fill solutions for low-voltage and medium-voltage switchgear. You will play a key role in designing, developing, and improving mechanical systems and equipment that support RMS Energy’s customers and field operations.
This position offers the opportunity to take your engineering expertise beyond the desk and see your work make a direct impact in the field.
You’ll collaborate closely with engineering, operations, field personnel, and project teams to develop practical, reliable, and cost-effective solutions while maintaining high standards for safety, quality, and performance. From concept through implementation, you’ll solve real-world engineering challenges and help ensure projects are successfully delivered on time.
What You’ll Do:
  • Develop mechanical designs for LV and MV switchgear retrofit and retro-fill applications, including replacement breakers, compartments, cell structures, bus interfaces, mounting systems, shutters, barriers, doors, and related components.
  • Review existing switchgear designs, drawings, photographs, field measurements, bills of material, and customer documentation to determine retrofit feasibility and develop replacement solutions.
  • Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and 2D manufacturing drawings using CAD software.
  • Design mechanical interfaces between new equipment and existing/legacy switchgear.
  • Perform dimensional analysis, tolerance stack-ups, fit-up evaluations, and interference checks to ensure successful installation and operation.
  • Develop designs that account for manufacturability, serviceability, installation, structural integrity, clearances, and applicable industry standards.
  • Work with electrical engineers to coordinate bus, conductor sizing, breaker control, protection and maintain insulation integrity.
  • Review legacy drawings and reverse-engineer existing equipment when necessary.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical recommendations for challenging retrofit applications.
  • Support prototype builds, first-article inspections, testing, troubleshooting, and field installation activities.
  • Investigate design issues and implement corrective actions when problems are identified during fabrication, assembly, testing, or installation.
  • Generate and maintain engineering documentation, including drawings, bills of material, specifications, engineering change documentation, and design calculations.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and field service personnel to resolve fabrication and assembly issues.
  • Perform engineering calculations, analysis, and evaluations to support projects and equipment improvements.
  • Support the selection, specification, and evaluation of mechanical equipment, materials, and components.
  • Participate in project planning, estimating, scheduling, and implementation as needed.
  • Conduct inspections, testing, and evaluations of equipment and systems.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, efficiency, safety, and performance.
  • Ensure engineering designs and recommendations comply with applicable codes, standards, and company requirements, such as IEEE C37, IEEE/IEC 62271-37 and UL891
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
The Experience We’re Looking For:
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience, preferably with significant experience in electrical distribution equipment, switchgear, switchboards, breakers, or related power equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience with mechanical system design, analysis, troubleshooting, and problem-solving
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar CAD platforms
  • Experience with low voltage and medium voltage electronic distribution systems
  • Strong collaboration skills, able to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams to support project delivery
  • Employ professional and effective communication in dealing with internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated organizational and time-management skills; able to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines with guidance from leadership
  • Self-driven and exhibits the ability to work with minimal supervision
Additional Requirements:
  • Valid and current driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Must successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug tests
  • Willing and able to travel frequently (15%), including overnight stays
  • Must be flexible to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and nights as needed
  • Ability to work remotely and stay self-directed in day-to-day responsibilities
Bonus Points for:
  • Direct experience with low-voltage and/or medium-voltage distribution-class switchgear.
  • Experience with ANSI/IEEE switchgear, circuit breakers, switchboards, MCCs, non-seg bus, or related electrical distribution equipment.
  • Experience designing retrofit solutions for legacy or obsolete switchgear equipment.
  • Familiarity with electrical clearances, creepage distances, insulation systems, bus structures, and mechanical requirements associated with LV/MV equipment.
  • Experience with sheet metal, machined components, copper bus, structural components, and other fabrication methods commonly used in switchgear.
  • Familiarity with engineering standards and practices applicable to electrical distribution equipment.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing, testing, commissioning, or field installation of electrical equipment.
