Updated Job Requisition
What you’ll be doing...
As a Senior Engineer, you will be responsible for implementation, maintenance, and ongoing support for Verizon’s Network within a 24x7 operational environment. You will act as a technical liaison to the Engineering, Planning, and vendor organizations to ensure supportability and reliability of our services. You will develop resolutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity, leveraging evolving technologies and AI-driven tools (such as Claude, Gemini, and emerging network automation platforms) to optimize transport efficiency and troubleshooting workflows. You will also be a Subject Matter Expert for the Network with responsibility to provide escalations, emergency outage support, and participate in weekend on-call rotations as needed.
- Working a consistent third shift (11:00 PM to 7:00 AM) to maintain 24x7 network reliability and support off-peak maintenance windows.
- Participating in an on-call weekend rotation to provide rapid technical response and leadership during critical network outages.
- Providing expert judgment and subject matter expert-level analysis for the design, development, and implementation of new products, services, and Packet OTN over Transport architectures.
- Conducting advanced research and telemetry analysis to provide root cause analysis and make recommendations to prevent future occurrences.
- Integrating AI utilities (e.g., Claude, Gemini) and automation workflows into daily operational routines to streamline diagnostic tasks, query log data, and accelerate resolution times.
- Assuming a team lead role for the workgroup during assigned shifts, sharing knowledge, and mentoring team members on evolving optical transport technologies and modern technical tools.
- Creating, maintaining, and contributing to departmental technical documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and AI-assisted technical knowledge bases.
- Collaborating cross-functionally with internal departments and vendor partners to analyze issues impacting service, evaluate evolving technology trends, and implement process improvements.
- Finishing complex projects independently and meeting tight timelines with minimal supervision.
What we’re looking for...
You’ll need to have:
- Bachelor's degree or four or more years of work experience.
- Four or more years of relevant experience in telecommunications or network engineering, demonstrated through work experience and/or military experience.
- Hands-on technical experience with Packet OTN (Optical Transport Network) architectures and optical transport technologies.
- Willingness and ability to work a dedicated 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM shift in a 24x7 production environment.
- Availability to participate in an on-call weekend rotation to support critical network outages and restoration efforts.
Even better if you have:
- Experience in the wireless or telecommunications industry supporting high-capacity transport infrastructure in a 24x7 Network Operations Center (NOC) or technical support context.
- Practical experience utilizing modern AI tools and LLMs (such as Claude, Gemini, or custom AI assistants) for technical research, script generation, log analysis, or documentation enhancement.
- Demonstrated adaptability to rapidly evolving technologies and a proactive approach to adopting new transport technologies and operational tools.
- Independent decision-making skills and the ability to clearly and concisely present complex transport concepts to non-technical audiences under high-pressure outage scenarios.
- Deep experience troubleshooting end-to-end network connectivity issues across optical, transport, and packet layers.
- Ability to lead technical discussions across multi-vendor environments with stakeholders of varying technical background levels.
- Advanced technological certifications in optical/packet networking (e.g., Ciena, Nokia, Cisco transport credentials) or network automation.
