Job Description

The Senior Building Plan Reviewer examines construction drawings and specifications for residential and commercial projects to ensure compliance with state and local building codes, zoning ordinances, and safety regulations before permits are issued. They work with architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure alignment with construction codes for structural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems, protecting public safety and ensuring regulatory compliance.

This is a hybrid position that requires in-office attendance at least two (2) days per week at one of our offices in the Northern Virginia / Washington, DC metro area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, thermal, energy, and fire safety designs for compliance with the International Building Code (IBC), applicable state building codes, national standards, and local ordinances
  • Perform independent calculations to verify performance-based design elements
  • Collaborate with colleagues, including planning, fire, and engineering staff, to confirm findings and recommend corrective measures
  • Provide feedback via written reports (correction letters) to architects, engineers, and contractors regarding code compliance and design flaws
  • Participate in professional development training and maintain current knowledge of codes and best practices
  • Maintain design files and records
  • Manage a team of junior plan review staff
  • Attend in-office meetings and coordination sessions twice weekly

Qualifications

  • Five years of construction experience required
  • Three years of experience managing personnel
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, ICC (International Code Council) certifications in building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing plan review. A three-month period will be allowed for any certificate that must be obtained. Exam fees may be sponsored.
  • Current or ability to obtain state-recognized plan review certification (e.g., Plans Examiner) required to perform plan review work in Virginia jurisdictions
  • Deep understanding of construction practices, materials, and municipal codes
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
  • Experience with Procore, Bluebeam, and ProjectDox preferred
  • Strong analytical, technical review, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organization, time management, and ability to manage shifting workloads
  • Valid driver's license required
