Job Overview
Dillon Engineering Services is recruiting a Senior Power Systems Engineer on behalf of a leading international engineering consultancy, with opportunities based in Dublin or Cork.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced power systems engineer to contribute to the design and optimisation of electrical power distribution systems, with a particular focus on data centre infrastructure. The successful candidate will conduct power system simulations, support multidisciplinary design teams, and ensure the reliability, safety and efficiency of electrical distribution networks.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct power system simulations, including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash and harmonic studies.
- Perform medium- and low-voltage cable sizing studies in accordance with relevant IEC standards.
- Undertake underground raceway system assessments and cable temperature calculations.
- Calculate transformer inrush currents and contribute to transient stability studies where required.
- Determine and review protection settings for transformers, generators, motors, feeders and transmission and distribution systems.
- Support the design and optimisation of electrical power distribution systems for data centre projects.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams to understand project requirements and develop appropriate engineering solutions.
- Review and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) and technical queries.
- Liaise with clients, participate in project meetings and communicate technical requirements and feedback to internal design teams.
- Validate input data to ensure the accuracy and reliability of simulation results.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports detailing simulation findings, recommendations and design considerations.
- Prepare, review and approve technical specifications for electrical equipment, including transformers, switchgear, cables, protection relays, UPS systems, generators and associated ancillary equipment.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation relating to power system studies and design activities.
- Stay up to date with industry developments, emerging technologies and best practices in power systems engineering.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of power system simulation methodologies and engineering processes.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Power Engineering or a relevant electrical engineering discipline.
- Proven experience in power systems engineering, preferably within the data centre industry.
- Experience using ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory or SKM power system analysis software, with ETAP preferred.
- Demonstrable experience conducting load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash and harmonic studies.
- Experience in medium- and low-voltage systems, ideally with exposure to high-voltage systems up to 132 kV.
- Experience conducting underground and above-ground cable sizing studies.
- Strong understanding of electrical power system modelling, including generators, transformers, motors and UPS systems.
- Knowledge of power system control and SCADA systems.
- Experience preparing and reviewing technical reports, engineering calculations and electrical equipment specifications.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical communication skills.
- Excellent collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively alongside clients and multidisciplinary design teams.
- Experience within an engineering consultancy or construction environment is preferred.
- Working towards Chartered Engineer status.
- Experience conducting earthing studies, transient stability studies and unit protection settings is advantageous.
- Understanding of international project delivery and the operations of a global engineering consultancy.
- A professional and ethical approach to engineering practice, with a commitment to quality, safety and continuous professional development.
Benefits
For permanent positions, the benefits package may include:
- 23 days annual leave, increasing to 28 days with five years of service.
- Holiday purchase and buy-back scheme.
- Hybrid working arrangements.
- Contributory company pension scheme.
- Company-funded healthcare cover, dependent on seniority.
- Potential discretionary bonus awards.
