Senior Power Systems Engineer - ERCOT Interconnection

Join as a Senior Power Systems Engineer and lead the delivery of power system generation, merchant transmission and load interconnection services across ERCOT. Operating with minimal supervision, the position manages complex technical studies, oversees interconnection processes and guides a team of power system engineers. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in load and generation interconnection, advanced modeling capabilities, and strong client-facing communication skills. This role is central to shaping interconnection strategy, ensuring high-quality technical analyses and supporting the growth of the organization’s power systems practice.

The role also includes responsibility for managing a small number of direct reports, supporting their performance and development, and ensuring effective utilization and achievement of applicable performance objectives.

Responsibilities

How you can make an impact:

• Lead load and generation interconnection efforts within the ERCOT footprint, serving as the technical expert for energy resource (generator and load) interconnection processes
• Identify optimal grid interconnection strategies based on system impacts and grid capacity
• Create and validate PSS/E, PSCAD, and TSAT plant models for load, Solar PV, BESS, Wind and conventional projects.
• Perform interconnection modeling, due diligence, analysis and specialized grid studies including Reactive Power Compensation, SSR, protection coordination, arc flash and TOV(plus).
• Review technical work and deliverables prepared by other engineers, provide technical direction and feedback, and ensure the accuracy, completeness, and quality of work prior to delivery.
• Support business development and prepare scopes of work/proposals.
• Independently lead technical discussions with clients, utilities, and other external stakeholders related to assigned work, including presenting study results and recommendations, responding to RFIs, addressing technical questions, and discussing technical requirements and existing project scope.
• Identify potential additional client needs or work opportunities and communicate them to the appropriate Manager or business leader. Provide technical input, assumptions, scope, and effort estimates in support of proposals and scope changes as needed.
• Monitor the technical, schedule, budget, and client aspects of assigned work and appropriately escalate significant issues, risks, scope changes, or other matters requiring higher-level involvement.
• Serve as a technical resource to other engineers and provide technical guidance, mentoring, and training to support the development of less experienced team members.
• Manage a small number of direct reports, including setting performance expectations and goals, conducting regular one-on-one meetings and performance reviews, supporting professional development, providing ongoing feedback and coaching, approving time and time-off requests as applicable, and addressing performance issues with appropriate management support when needed.
• Monitor the workload, utilization, and applicable performance KPIs of direct reports and take appropriate actions to support achievement of established objectives.
• Participate in the interview and selection process for positions within the team, including providing input on candidates being considered for direct-report positions.
• Contribute to improvements in technical processes, tools, scripts, methodologies, and study execution to support increased efficiency, quality, and consistency.
• Represent EPE at technical meetings and conferences.

Qualifications

Bring your passion, here's what’s needed:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering; master's degree is a plus.
• 5+ years professional experience as a Power Systems Engineer supporting generation, transmission and/or load interconnection
• Well-versed in the interconnection process of ERCOT from the initial filing of the interconnection application through commercial operations; other ISOs area plus
• PSCAD and PSS/E modeling experience, generation-focused (load modeling is a plus)
• Hands-on ERCOT Model Quality Testing (MQT) experience.
• Demonstrated ability to independently perform and lead complex engineering analyses, interpret results, develop technical solutions, and make sound technical recommendations.
• Demonstrated ability to apply independent engineering judgment to complex or non-routine technical issues.
• Ability to lead assigned tasks and smaller or standard projects while managing technical quality, schedule, budget, resource allocation, and efficient execution.
• Ability to review technical work and deliverables prepared by other engineers and provide effective technical direction and feedback.
• Experience leveraging AI and automation tools responsibly to improve quality, productivity and innovation
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to independently communicate and present technical analyses, results, recommendations, and project requirements to clients, utilities, and other internal and external stakeholders.
• Have high standards in producing quality reports ad products that he/she shall own with pride
• Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership, mentoring, coaching, and development support to less experienced engineers.
• Ability to effectively manage a small number of direct reports and support their performance, development, workload, utilization, and achievement of applicable performance objectives.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments, project responsibilities, and priorities.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
• Collaborative attitude with the ability to work effectively across project teams and provide technical support beyond immediate assignments when needed.
