We are looking for an Amazing: Senior PowerBuilder Developer / Technical Analyst 🚀

Seniority: Senior (5+ years)

Type of position: Hybrid in Brussels - 3 days per week on-site

The amazing you, will have:

• At least 5 years of hands-on experience with PowerBuilder, including versions 8 through 2022 and Appeon.
• Strong expertise in PowerScript, including events, functions, structures, transaction management (SQLCA, COMMIT, ROLLBACK) and PowerBuilder Foundation Classes (PFC).
• Extensive experience with DataWindows and DataStores, including Composite, Group and Nested DataWindows, and expressions such as Describe, Modify and Evaluate.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases and SQL, including stored procedures (PL/SQL), embedded and dynamic SQL, transactions and query optimization.
• Experience with reverse engineering legacy applications, analysing PowerBuilder objects, PBLs, DataWindows, DataStores, PowerScript and PFC.
• Ability to identify, extract and document business rules, distinguishing core business logic from UI behaviour, obsolete functionality and historical workarounds.
• Experience decoupling business logic from GUI controls and direct database access to support application modernisation and migration.
• Understanding of modern application architectures, including REST APIs, microservices, JSON DTOs, Spring Boot and Angular.
• Knowledge of technical documentation, including clear and structured functional and technical specifications.
• Experience collaborating with Business Analysts, domain experts and development teams to map legacy business logic to target business processes.
• Experience defining and validating REST API contracts with Java/Angular teams and supporting non-regression testing.
• Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to challenge legacy code, identify edge cases and clarify requirements with business stakeholders.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with management, functional analysts and technical teams.
• Professional fluency in English and proficiency in either French or Dutch.

To turn yourself from amazing to unique, you’ll have (plus):

• Experience with Java and Spring Boot and/or Angular; alternatively, a strong willingness and ability to learn these technologies.
• Knowledge of Visual Expert and AI-assisted code analysis tools.
• Experience with characterisation testing and Golden Master testing to preserve existing business behaviour during migration.
• Experience maintaining technical knowledge bases and reducing dependency on individual developers.
• Experience working on legacy application modernisation and migration to modern architectures.
• Familiarity with static code analysis and traceability between legacy code, business rules and new technical specifications.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Technical Support & Maintenance: Provide advanced support for a complex PowerBuilder application and share production maintenance responsibilities with the lead developer.
• Reverse Engineering: Inspect and map legacy application components to understand and document actual system behaviour.
• Business Rule Analysis: Identify and document core business rules, separating them from UI behaviour and obsolete functionality.
• Knowledge Management: Maintain structured technical documentation and a knowledge base to reduce dependency on individual team members.
• Business Collaboration: Work with Business Analysts and domain experts to map legacy logic to target business processes.
• Application Modernisation: Help decouple business logic from the user interface and database access.
• Migration Support: Collaborate with Java/Angular developers to define REST API contracts and support migration to the new platform.
• Testing & Validation: Support non-regression testing, including characterisation and Golden Master tests.
• Tooling & Traceability: Use Visual Expert and AI-assisted analysis tools to accelerate documentation and maintain traceability between legacy code, business rules and new specifications.
