Senior Product Designer
In Brief
We are a growing health-tech company running a telemedicine platform and a portfolio of technology-enabled clinical services for the NHS. Our products support clinicians and patients by improving access to specialist advice and reducing pressure on frontline services.
As we continue to scale, we are looking for a Senior Product Designer responsible for establishing our design practice and ensuring user needs are at the heart of everything we build.
Contract type: Full-time, Permanent
Hours of work: Monday to Friday, 37.5 hrs / week (08:00-16:30 or 08:30-17:00 or 09:00-17:30) with potential flexible working support within these bands
Place of work: Remote with 3-4 times per month travel to Oxford
Salary: Competitive market salary reflective of its seniority and impact
The Role
You will work across the full breadth of design, from research and discovery through to interaction design and prototyping, helping the team get closer to clinicians and patients, make better-informed decisions, and continuously raise the quality of our products. You will be equally comfortable running discovery alongside delivery - operating in a lean, agile environment where insight and iteration go hand in hand, rather than design being resolved upfront.
You will collaborate closely with product, development, and account management teams to ensure we are building products that work for NHS clinicians and patients in real-world workflows.
This role operates at a senior level, reporting to the Head of Product.
Your Mission
Over the next 6-12 months you will, amongst other activities:
- Define the design approach that guide how we build products across our portfolio
- Develop a vision prototype that gives stakeholders a clear, tangible sense of where our products are heading
- Lead user research and discovery to uncover clinician and patient needs
- Build and mentor design and research capability across the product team
- Work with product managers and developers to ensure our products are intuitive, accessible, and clinically safe
- Drive a culture of user-centred design thinking across the organization
- Identify opportunities to apply emerging design practices and technologies to improve usability and clinical outcomes
Key Responsibilities
Research & Discovery
- In collaboration with Product Managers, plan and conduct user research with clinicians, patients, and NHS stakeholders to surface real workflow needs and pain points
- Synthesise findings into clear, actionable insights that directly inform product decisions and roadmap priorities
- Define and evolve the team approach to discovery, ensuring it is rigorous, efficient, and repeatable
- Champion evidence-based decision making across product and development
Design approach & Process
- Own the design process end-to-end, from early-stage concepts through to high-fidelity prototypes ready for development
- Build and maintain a design system that creates consistency and coherence across our product portfolio, leveraging it to improve existing products and align future ones
- Ensure all design work meets NHS accessibility standards, clinical safety requirements, and relevant regulatory obligations
- Balance speed and quality in a regulated environment, making sound trade-offs without compromising user experience
Strategy & Direction
- Define design principles and practices that guide product decisions across the portfolio
- Work closely with the Head of Product and others to translate product strategy into clear design direction
- Identify UX improvements that drive clinical workflow efficiency, adoption, and measurable user satisfaction
- Stay close to NHS policy, digital standards, and emerging design practices that could shape how we build our products
Collaboration & Influence
- Embed user-centred thinking across product and development, coaching teams on design principles and approaches
- Work closely with account management to understand how clinicians and patients experience our products in practice
- Communicate design rationale clearly and persuasively to clinical, technical, and commercial stakeholders
- Advocate for the user in prioritisation and trade-off discussions, ensuring user needs remain visible across the business
What Success Looks Like (12 months)
- A clear set of design principles and practices embedded across product and development
- A compelling vision prototype that aligns the SLT and wider stakeholders on long-term product direction
- User research that is directly and demonstrably shaping product decisions and roadmap priorities
- A design system in place that creates consistency across our product portfolio
- Product Managers and developers who are more confident in discovery and better equipped to make user-informed decisions
Essential Experience
- Proven senior experience in product design, spanning user research, interaction design, and prototyping
- Proven experience designing and researching in lean, dual-track agile environment
- A track record of influencing product direction through user insight and design quality, not just execution
- Experience working in or alongside complex, regulated environments (NHS, healthcare, or similar)
- Strong communication skills and the ability to bring clinical, technical, and commercial stakeholders on the design journey
- Comfortable leading discovery independently and working without a large supporting design team
- Familiarity with accessible design principles and standards (e.g. WCAG)
Desirable Experience
- Direct experience of NHS digital products, clinical workflows, or healthtech environments
- Familiarity with NHS digital standards, accessibility requirements (e.g. WCAG 2.1, and clinical safety obligations (e.g. DCB0129)
- Experience building or contributing to a design system from the ground up
- Experience establishing research operations (reops) in a scaleup environment
- Exposure to a start-up or scale-up environment where design practice is still being established
- Experience leveraging AI in the design and research process, for example, by creating digital twins to speed up validation.
How You Work
- You get close to users and let insight drive your decisions, rather than designing from assumption
- You work comfortably across the full design spectrum, from messy early discovery to polished, development-ready prototypes
- You bring structure and clarity to design without creating unnecessary process or overhead
- You communicate your thinking clearly and adapt your approach depending on your audience
- You collaborate generously, helping product managers, developers, and other colleagues build their design instincts over time
- You are pragmatic and composed when navigating ambiguity, competing priorities, and the constraints of a regulated environment
