Help more pets get the care they need, by designing how vet clinics and pet parents connect.
The reminder that gets a puppy in for its vaccinations. The text that reassures a worried owner after surgery. The booking made at 10pm from the couch. The form filled in before anyone walks through the clinic door. These small moments decide whether a pet gets the care it needs, and they're what Vello is built for.
Vello is IDEXX's new client engagement platform, sitting at the centre of our veterinary software portfolio. It brings together automated reminders, two-way texting, online scheduling, digital forms, and the Vello pet parent app and web portal. Practices using Vello have seen wellness visits rise by 4.3%, so good design here shows up as healthier pets and less stressed clinic teams.
We're looking for a Senior Product Designer to join our Auckland team and help shape where Vello goes next.
Why this role stands out
- Design both sides of the relationship. You'll shape the experience for pet parents (a consumer mobile app and web portal) and for the busy clinic teams on the other end. Few roles let you own both sides of a conversation.
- Shape a new platform, not maintain an old one. Vello is new, so the patterns, flows, and priorities you help set now will last. You'll influence what we build, not just how it looks.
- Design in the codebase, not just in Figma. On Vello, designers use agentic coding tools to commit to the codebase and work through pull requests alongside engineers. You'll have a solid design system and tooling behind you, so you can spend your time on great experiences.
- Take on a meaty systems challenge. Vello works natively with three IDEXX practice management systems: ezyVet, Neo, and Cornerstone. Making that complexity feel effortless is the job.
- See your impact. Your work shows up in fewer no-shows, less admin for vet teams, and more pets coming in for preventive care.
What you'll do
- Lead design for features across the Vello pet parent app, web portal, and practice-facing tools, from early discovery through to release
- Work in a product trio with a product manager and engineers, framing the right problem before jumping to solutions
- Get close to customers through clinic visits, interviews, and video calls, then bring those insights back to the team
- Combine product data with qualitative insight to decide what to build and to know whether it's working
- Shape Vello's information architecture: how content, navigation, and data are structured across the app, portal, and practice tools, so the platform holds together as it grows
- Bring designs to life in code, using agentic coding tools and our design system to commit changes and collaborate with engineers on pull requests
- Make ideas tangible with prototypes, journey maps, and service blueprints that get the team aligned quickly
- Share your design rationale clearly, invite critique, and iterate based on what you learn
- Use Gen AI tools to speed up research synthesis, exploration, and prototyping, without lowering the bar on craft
- Contribute to the wider IDEXX software design community, sharing patterns and learning with designers across our products
About you
- 5+ years in product design, with a portfolio that shows how you work through complex problems, not just the final screens
- Strong interaction and UI craft, a mobile-first mindset, and a working knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g. WCAG)
- A track record of simplifying complicated workflows or domains and lifting product quality along the way
- Strong systems thinking with an information-architecture mindset: you consider structure, navigation, naming, and how the pieces connect, and you can move from that big picture down to pixel-level UI detail
- Comfort with new ways of working, including using agentic coding tools, committing to a codebase, and collaborating with engineers on pull requests. You don't need to be an engineer, but you're at ease working with our design system and tooling to ship real code
- A clear communicator and good listener who brings product, engineering, and stakeholders along with you, and who's at home in cross-functional, agile teams
Bonus points for:
- Designing consumer mobile apps
- Products with two connected audiences, such as B2B2C platforms or marketplaces
- Healthcare, medical, or other regulated software
- A soft spot for animals (our office is dog-friendly, so this helps)
Don't tick every box? We'd still love to hear from you. If this role excites you, please apply.
What you'll get
- Hybrid working: 3 days a week in our modern Auckland office (free gym and rooftop terrace included)
- Fully subsidised Southern Cross health insurance
- MacBook, design software, and access to the latest Gen AI and agentic coding tools
- Structured onboarding, ongoing internal and external learning, and transparent, performance-driven career development
- The chance to shape the products and future of a leader in veterinary care
- A dog-friendly workplace, plus coffee, fruit, and Food Truck Friday
- Part-subsidised parking via Parkable
