The Company

The Irish Times Group is Ireland's leading independent quality news publishing organisation. The core activity of The Irish Times Group has evolved from six-day print publishing to a seven-day multi-platform news publisher with a market-leading position in subscriptions, audience engagement and digital innovation.

We focus on producing trusted journalism for our readers, providing media solutions for customers and continuously evolving our products, platforms and ways of working in a rapidly changing media landscape.

The Company is owned by The Irish Times Trust and is managed by The Irish Times DAC. In recent years, The Irish Times Group has expanded its interests to include the Irish Examiner, The Echo, regional newspapers, RecruitIreland.com, MyHome.ie, RIP.ie, The Gloss, Score Beo and other leading Irish digital brands.

The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer to help shape and deliver high-quality digital products and experiences. This is a hands-on, multidisciplinary role spanning the full product lifecycle, from discovery and research through to prototyping, visual design, delivery and iteration.

You’ll work closely with Product, Engineering and wider stakeholders to understand customer problems, identify opportunities and turn ideas into clear, useful experiences. The role will suit someone who is comfortable with ambiguity, can bring structure where needed and knows when to be pragmatic and move forward.

Responsibilities

  • End-to-End Ownership: Lead design from discovery through to delivery and iteration, creating journeys, flows, prototypes and polished UI. Test ideas quickly before investing heavily in solutions.
  • User advocacy: Represent the user perspective, balancing customer needs with commercial goals and editorial integrity.
  • Research: Conduct user and market research, usability testing and concept validation, translating insights and data into clear product decisions.
  • Product Ecosystems: Design across responsive web and native apps, maintaining a consistent, high-quality experience across the Group’s products and titles.
  • Design System: Contribute to and evolve our design system while championing accessibility and inclusive design.
  • Collaboration & Facilitation: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, facilitate workshops and clearly communicate design thinking, decisions and trade-offs. Utilise AI to help process when it useful.
  • Product Thinking: Understand the wider business and product context, helping identify opportunities and shape solutions rather than simply responding to briefs.
  • Feedback & Mentorship: Give and receive constructive critique and provide guidance to junior and mid-weight designers to raise the overall quality of the team.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • 5+ years of hands-on product design experience, ideally across high-traffic web and mobile products.
  • An Honours degree in a design-related discipline.
  • A portfolio demonstrating expert-level UI execution and deep UX research/problem-solving.
  • Strong UX, interaction and visual design skills.
  • Strong Figma and prototyping skills.
  • Experience conducting user research and usability testing.
  • Experience designing responsive web and/or native mobile products.
  • Experience working with design systems and a good understanding of accessibility.
  • Strong communication, presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Comfortable working in fast-moving, cross-functional teams and managing design work across multiple priorities.
  • Ability to move between strategic thinking and hands-on execution.
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity, learning quickly and stepping beyond traditional design boundaries when required.
  • Experience with AI-assisted design and prototyping tools such as Figma Make, Lovable or similar, and an understanding of how these tools can support the product development process.

Desirable

  • Experience in news, publishing or subscription products.
  • Service design experience.
  • Brand or marketing design experience.
  • Adobe Creative Suite experience.
  • Experience with Arc XP, WordPress, Salesforce Marketing Cloud or Piano/Zephr.
  • Basic understanding of front-end development and design-to-code workflows.

If you are excited by content, technology, storytelling and the future of journalism, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact while working on challenges that are both technically complex and highly visible.
