Senior Product Designer (Contract)
IR35: Outside | Location: Remote (UK) | Start: ASAP (within 1 to 2 weeks) | Duration: Initial contract to end of December 2026, with likely extension through 2027
About the opportunity
Buildcircle is partnering with a well-established energy business, part of a major UK energy group, to find an experienced Product Designer for an upcoming project.
Our client helps organisations decarbonise and cut costs through large-scale onsite energy solutions. These include combined heat and power, solar PV and heat pumps, all backed by long-term operations and maintenance services. They also offer in-house financing and net zero consultancy, helping customers plan realistic routes to cleaner, more secure and more affordable energy.
The project
The client is unifying parts of its current technical landscape, bringing a range of existing internal applications and platforms together into a more joined-up, efficient estate. The business currently has no in-house design expertise, so you’ll be shaping how the new suite of tools works from a user experience standpoint, starting with a research-led design phase.
You’ll work as part of a Buildcircle team alongside a Technical Product Manager and a User Researcher, helping to set the design direction and give employees a better, more efficient engineering experience.
This is an AI-forward role. We’re looking for designers who already use AI tools as a core part of how they work day to day, and who can bring that approach to the team from day one.
The contract runs initially until the end of this year, and there’s a strong chance it will be extended to the end of 2027.
What you’ll be doing
- Working with the researcher to understand how employees use the current applications, including pain points, overlaps and gaps
- Turning research insights into user journeys, information architecture and service flows for the unified suite
- Designing wireframes, prototypes and high-fidelity UI, and testing them with real users
- Setting up foundational design practices, such as patterns and a starter design system, in a business new to design
- Using AI tools to speed up synthesis, ideation, prototyping and documentation
- Collaborating closely with the Product Manager and engineers to make sure designs are feasible and prioritised
- Presenting design thinking and rationale clearly to stakeholders with little design background
What we’re looking for
- Solid experience as a Product Designer or UX Designer with well-rounded skills across research, interaction design and UI
- Essential: proven, hands-on use of AI in your current workflows (for example, using AI for research synthesis, ideation, prototyping or design documentation), and the ability to give real examples of how it has improved your output
- Experience designing internal tools, enterprise platforms or complex multi-application environments
- Confidence working in organisations with low design maturity, and championing user-centred design
- Strong prototyping skills in Figma or similar tools
- Experience working in Agile, cross-functional delivery teams
- Energy, utilities or infrastructure experience is a strong plus but not essential
Why apply?
- Outside IR35 contract at £550 to £600 per day
- Fully remote
- Initial contract to the end of 2026, with probable extension through to the end of 2027
- A chance to set the design foundations in a business starting from scratch
- A meaningful project supporting organisations on their journey to net zero
- Early start, available within the next one to two weeks
