Job Purpose
The Development team at Gresham is responsible for identifying, building and maintaining innovative technologies that solve our customers’ Control, Connect, Data and EDM problems. As a Senior QA Engineer in our Control team, you help us deliver the highest possible quality for our financial reconciliation and payments platform, embedding quality into every stage of development – from design and implementation through to release – and working closely with engineers, Product and key stakeholders while maintaining a strong customer focus.
This is a hands-on, automation-focused role. You will design, build and own automated test suites across our APIs, services and React front end, lead our performance testing, and help the team ship faster and with confidence by making testing a continuous, shared part of how we work rather than a stage at the end. You will also play a leading part in adopting AI tools across our testing practice. Our platform is cloud-native and multi-tenant, built with Kotlin, Java, Spring Boot, React and TypeScript, and runs on Docker and Kubernetes in AWS with PostgreSQL.
Key Responsibilities
Essential Skills & Experience
Equal Opportunities Statement
At Gresham, we are committed to building a diverse and inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We actively encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds and are dedicated to providing a workplace where everyone feels valued, respected and supported.
We make employment decisions based on merit, skills and potential, and do not discriminate based on any protected characteristic. We are also committed to making reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process and employment lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
- Working within a high performing, interdisciplinary team of engineers, a product manager and architect, getting involved from kickoff in designing and scoping features, identifying risk early and shaping acceptance criteria and BDD scenarios
- Designing, building and maintaining automated tests at the right levels – API, integration, contract and end-to-end UI – and integrating them into our CI/CD pipelines so every change gets fast, reliable feedback
- Owning the team’s test automation frameworks and tooling, keeping tests fast, stable and maintainable, and tackling flaky tests and gaps in coverage
- Leading performance, load and scalability testing: defining realistic scenarios and data volumes, running tests, analysing results and working with engineers to diagnose and resolve bottlenecks
- Reviewing pull requests with a quality lens – test coverage, testability, edge cases and risk – helping engineers write better tests and sharing the review load across the team
- Championing the use of AI tools in testing – for example AI-assisted test generation, test data creation and failure analysis – and helping the team adopt them effectively and responsibly
- Defining and evolving the team’s test strategy and quality metrics, making quality visible and driving continuous improvement
- Carrying out targeted exploratory testing of complex or high-risk changes, and raising clear, well-evidenced defects
- Building and managing realistic test data and environments, including for multi-tenant and high-volume scenarios
- Supporting regular releases with confidence checks on key features, and participating in the triage of issues reported by customers, working with the Customer Support team
- Considering security and data privacy in all testing, with due concern for compliance with adopted standards (PCI, ISO27001)
- Coaching and mentoring engineers in testing practices, so that quality is owned by the whole team
- Fully participating in the relevant Agile events; planning and estimation, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews and retrospectives
Essential Skills & Experience
- Significant commercial experience as a QA, test automation or SDET engineer, including owning test automation for a product or team
- Strong programming skills for test automation in Kotlin, Java or TypeScript, with confidence reading and reviewing production code
- Hands-on API and UI test automation experience using modern tools such as Cypress or Playwright
- Experience testing Spring Boot microservices, including integration and contract testing with tools such as JUnit and Testcontainers
- Proven performance and load testing experience with tools such as Gatling, k6 or JMeter, including analysing results with monitoring and observability tools
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and testing applications running on Docker, Kubernetes and AWS
- Good SQL skills, ideally PostgreSQL, for setting up and validating test data
- AI literate: confident using AI-assisted tools day to day, with experience of (or a strong interest in) applying them to testing and in testing AI-powered product features
- A solid understanding of the test pyramid, BDD and TDD, with a preference for preventing bugs over detecting them
- Excellent experience with Agile and Lean ways of working, including collaborative techniques such as Three Amigos and Example Mapping
- A pragmatic, risk-based approach to test design and exploratory testing, focusing effort where risk and value are highest
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to explain risk and quality trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
- Self-motivated and able to work autonomously, while building strong relationships through sharing ideas, listening and a feedback and coaching mindset
- Curious and driven to keep learning, keeping pace with evolving tools, technologies and practices
- Experience testing complex financial systems, such as reconciliation, payments or data integrity is desirable
