Our Senior Engineer’s focus on delivering critical digital services from cradle to grave working on a variety of projects for wide reaching Public Services. Our Lead Engineer’s go beyond delivery—shaping technical strategy, mentoring engineers, and driving innovation across projects. You’ll influence best practices within our engineering community and play a key role in defining how we build and deliver modern digital services. Hybrid working Your working location will vary depending on your role, personal needs, and business requirements. This will typically include a mix of company offices, client sites, and remote work from home. If your location is Telford or Hove you will be expected to work from the office between 40% and 70% of the time. For all other locations you need to be prepared to come into the Telford or Hove office once to twice a month (Lead Engineers more frequently). As we align closely with customer requirements—which may change over time—you will need to remain flexible. Please note that fully remote working (100% from home) is not permitted. Your role As a Scala Engineer, you'll help design, develop and deliver large-scale digital services that make a real impact. Working within agile, multidisciplinary teams, you'll build high-quality solutions using modern Scala engineering practices while contributing to the continuous improvement of our technology, people, and delivery capabilities. As a Senior Scala Engineer, you will Develop and maintain Scala services using frameworks such as Play, Akka, and modern functional programming approaches. Design, build, and optimise microservices for performance, scalability, resilience, and reliability. Write high-quality, testable code using engineering practices such as TDD, BDD, and automated testing frameworks including ScalaTest. Support build, deployment, and release processes using SBT, CI/CD pipelines, Docker, and Kubernetes. Collaborate with architects, engineers, product teams, and stakeholders to deliver solutions aligned to business needs. Mentor and coach engineers, promoting Scala best practices and supporting technical development across the team. Contribute to operational excellence through monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement activities. In addition, as a Lead Scala Engineer, you will Define and guide the technical architecture for Scala-based solutions, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and long-term scalability. Establish technical direction, engineering standards, and best practices across multiple teams and programmes. Lead the resolution of complex technical challenges, including distributed systems design, integration challenges, and performance optimisation. Influence technical decision-making at programme and senior stakeholder level, acting as a trusted engineering advisor. Drive engineering capability growth through recruitment, coaching, mentoring, and the development of Scala communities of practice. Coordinate and support multiple delivery teams, ensuring consistency, quality, and technical excellence across solutions. Champion innovation by evaluating and introducing emerging Scala frameworks, tools, and engineering practices. Your skills and experience Strong professional experience with Scala and functional programming Experience designing and consuming REST APIs; JSON validation/serialisation using Play JSON or Circe. Designing for and querying relational databases such as PostgreSQL and/or NoSQL databases such as MongoDB. Writing unit and integration tests using technology such as ScalaTest, Specs2 and Mockito while following TDD/BDD Familiarity with SBT for build/CI/CD automation and GIT with branching strategies. Solid understanding of web/HTTP, web security best practices, and performance considerations. Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and containerisation. Lead Engineer will also demonstrate Ability to design and govern complex Scala-based architectures for scalability and maintainability. Skill in setting technology roadmaps and influencing decisions across multiple teams. Strong capability to lead teams, coach senior engineers, and foster a culture of technical excellence. Ability to communicate technical strategies effectively to senior stakeholders and influence outcomes. Driving Scala engineering capability through recruitment, training, and the establishment of communities of practice. Competence in introducing emerging Scala libraries, frameworks, and patterns to enhance delivery.
