Senior Scientist; Air Quality
Location: Remote
Compensation: $140,000 - $170,000 annually (negotiable based on experience)
Spheros Environmental is looking for an experienced Senior Air Quality Scientist to support the growth and delivery of our air quality services. This role will combine technical leadership, project management, client engagement, and business development, with approximately 25% of the position focused on identifying new opportunities, developing client relationships, and supporting proposals and pursuits.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical experience across air quality, with the ability to work across areas such as air quality monitoring, data analysis, modeling, emissions, regulatory support, and related environmental services. This person will work closely with clients and internal teams to develop practical, high-quality solutions while helping expand Spheros Environmental's air quality capabilities and market presence.
The Senior Scientist will work with a high degree of independence, manage complex projects, contribute to strategic initiatives, and serve as a technical resource and mentor to other scientists and staff.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Lead the design and execution of air quality projects, including monitoring, data analysis, modeling, emissions analysis, and regulatory support.
- Apply technical expertise to develop practical solutions for complex air quality and environmental challenges.
- Interpret and communicate complex air quality data and technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Maintain familiarity with evolving federal, state, and local air quality regulations, standards, and industry practices.
- Evaluate and incorporate emerging technologies, tools, and methodologies into air quality projects.
- Lead the preparation and review of technical reports, presentations, data visualizations, dashboards, and other client deliverables.
- Serve as a technical resource and mentor to scientists, analysts, and other project staff.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Spheros Environmental to integrate air quality services with broader environmental and resilience solutions.

Client Engagement & Business Development
Approximately 25% of the role
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities across air quality and related environmental services.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients.
- Participate in client meetings, industry conferences, networking events, and other business development activities.
- Support proposal development, including scoping, technical approaches, budgets, and written content.
- Work with company leadership to identify target markets, clients, and opportunities for growth.
- Understand client needs and connect them with Spheros Environmental's air quality capabilities and broader technical services.
- Represent Spheros Environmental and its air quality expertise within the industry.
Project Management
- Manage complex, multi-stakeholder air quality projects from proposal through delivery.
- Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and technical approaches to meet client needs.
- Coordinate project teams and ensure work is delivered on schedule, within budget, and to a high standard of quality.
- Communicate project progress, technical findings, and recommendations clearly to clients and internal stakeholders.
- Identify opportunities to expand existing projects and connect clients with additional Spheros Environmental services.
- Champion company policies and procedures and share ideas and suggestions for enhancing them.
Qualifications
- Experience/Education: At least 10 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience in Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong technical knowledge of air quality and experience in one or more areas such as air quality monitoring, data analysis, modeling, emissions, permitting, or regulatory compliance.
- Proven experience managing complex environmental projects and working directly with clients.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain client relationships and contribute to business development activities.
- Strong technical writing, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to translate complex technical information into clear recommendations for clients and non-technical audiences.
- Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to junior and mid-level staff.
- Comfortable managing multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment through strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability and willingness to travel periodically in support of client, project, and business development activities.
