Job Description

This is a remote position.

Location: Alberta, Canada

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced, proactive, and creative Senior Social Media & Content Virtual Assistant to support a growing chocolate tasting festival business in Alberta, Canada.

The ideal candidate is highly knowledgeable about Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube and can independently manage day-to-day social media activities, edit video content, create engaging graphics and carousels, and actively engage with the online community.

This role is ideal for someone who brings expertise, ideas, and initiative—not someone who requires extensive training or direction. You will work closely with the business owner to build brand awareness, strengthen the festival's online presence, and eventually support ticket sales and festival promotions.

Scope of Work

Social Media Management

  • Manage and maintain Facebook and Instagram content.
  • Publish and schedule regular posts, including short-form video content on YouTube.
  • Develop and recommend social media strategies appropriate for each platform.
  • Help plan and maintain an effective content calendar.
  • Provide proactive recommendations on content, posting schedules, engagement, and audience growth.
  • Meta advertising experience listed as an asset (not a core responsibility). May become part of the role depending on the VA’s experience.
  • Focus on organic, location-based audience growth rather than purchasing followers or using artificial engagement tactics.

Content Creation & Design

  • Create engaging Canva graphics and social media carousels.
  • Edit talking-head videos and Reels provided by the business owner.
  • Edit and format short-form videos for Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube Shorts.
  • Create or edit B-roll where appropriate.
  • Repurpose existing content when relevant.
  • Ensure all visual content aligns with the brand's style and objectives.
  • Do not use AI-generated images for social media content. Content should primarily use real photographs, original materials, graphics, and talking-head videos.

Community Engagement & Outreach

  • Respond thoughtfully and professionally to comments and messages.
  • Engage meaningfully with relevant accounts and communities within the chocolate, food, festival, and related industries.
  • Proactively interact with chocolate makers, vendors, festivals, and other relevant industry accounts.
  • Go beyond generic comments and contribute genuine, relevant conversations that build relationships and visibility.

Influencer & Media Outreach (New Addition)

  • Conduct influencer research and outreach to expand brand visibility.
  • Support media research, outreach, and follow-up.
  • Help maintain and work through the existing media database.

Content Organization

  • Organize and maintain the company’s Canva workspace and existing content library.
  • Review older content to identify materials that can be refreshed or repurposed.
  • Maintain an organized system for social media assets, drafts, and published content.

Content & Marketing Priorities

  • Now through December 1: Focus on brand awareness, audience engagement, and building an Alberta-based following.
  • December 1 – April festival: Shift toward festival promotion and ticket sales, while continuing educational and entertaining content (chocolate education, festival info, “Chocolate Minute” videos).
  • April & May: Support promotional content for the two chocolate tasting festivals, followed by event-related content, thank-you posts, and audience engagement.

Qualifications & Personal Attributes

  • Senior-level experience in social media management, preferably with demonstrated results.
  • Strong working knowledge of Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
  • Experience creating, editing, scheduling, and publishing social media content.
  • Strong short-form video editing skills, particularly for Reels and YouTube Shorts.
  • Advanced or highly proficient Canva skills.
  • Strong understanding of social media strategy, content planning, audience engagement, and platform-specific best practices.
  • Experience with Meta advertising is an asset.
  • Excellent written communication and ability to engage authentically with online communities.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proactive and comfortable providing ideas, recommendations, and strategic input.
  • Creative and able to bring fresh, current ideas to the brand.
  • Reliable, resourceful, and able to manage priorities independently.
  • Comfortable taking ownership of assigned tasks rather than waiting for detailed instructions.
  • Experience with food, events, festivals, chocolate, hospitality, or lifestyle brands is an asset but not required.
  • Most importantly: the successful candidate should reduce the owner’s workload, not create additional work through extensive training or supervision.

Tools & Technology

  • Canva
  • Facebook / Meta Business Suite
  • Instagram
  • YouTube / YouTube Shorts
  • TikTok / Pinterest (possible future platforms)
  • Video editing software such as CapCut or equivalent
  • Social media scheduling/publishing platforms
  • Other relevant photo, video, and content creation tools

Shifts & Hours

  • Initial commitment: minimum of 10 hours per week.
  • Hours may increase to 15–20 per week based on workload and performance.
  • Flexible working hours; VA does not need to work the same hours as the business owner.
  • Some flexibility to accommodate real-time community engagement preferred.
  • Scheduled posts can be prepared in advance.
  • Business owner’s primary time zone: Mountain Time (UTC−6).
  • VA expected to provide an end-of-day report outlining completed tasks, pending work, and any items requiring attention.

Target Start Date

October 2026 (flexible, as soon as a suitable candidate is selected).
