Senior Software Engineer
Location: Calgary, Alberta (hybrid, 90+% remote; candidates must be based in the Calgary area)
Employment: Full-time
Security Clearance: Secret (Tacteris sponsors your application)
About Tacteris
Tacteris builds Canadian defence software for military planning, command and decision support. Our flagship platform, Maestro, supports all-domain operational planning across land, air, maritime, space and cyber, and is used by operational planners in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and Allied militaries. Our product suite also includes Forte, which CAF logistics planners use for strategic logistics, deployment and sustainment, and Chorus, for real-time intelligence planning. AI and machine learning are built into all three products.
We work directly with the CAF, defence partners, NATO and Allied customers. We're a small team of fewer than ten people, and we're growing. Our team combines defence experience with deep expertise in software engineering, AI/ML and military operations.
The Role
As a Senior Software Engineer at Tacteris, you'll help build the software that military planners rely on to make decisions. Depending on your strengths and our priorities, you'll work on one or more of Maestro, Forte and Chorus.
On a team our size, your work reaches users quickly and your technical decisions shape our products for years to come. You'll work directly with product designers and domain experts with operational military experience, turning complex planning, logistics and intelligence workflows into high quality software that is clear, fast and dependable.
You'll also help shape the company as it grows: mentoring new engineers, leading technical discussions, and helping define how we build and deliver software. You don't need a defence background. We'll help you learn the domain, and we value the perspective you bring regardless of your background.
What You'll Do
- Design, build, test and maintain features across our products, from early design through release and field support.
- Develop significant parts of our system architecture and make sound technical trade-offs.
- Help bring Maestro to new platforms, including Android and WebAssembly.
- Find new ways to apply AI/ML to planning problems, building on the capabilities already in our products.
- Work closely with product designers and domain experts to understand how planners work and what they need.
- Review code, mentor teammates and help onboard new engineers as the team grows.
- Pitch in wherever needed to get high-quality releases out on time.
Our Stack
- Maestro: C++ and Qt, running on Windows desktop, PC VR and Linux. Android and WebAssembly versions are on the roadmap.
- Forte and Chorus: C# and ASP.NET on the back end, Vue.js on the front end.
How We Work
- Trunk-based development
- Continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD)
- Test-driven development (TDD)
- Continuous improvement to adapt our processes to changing circumstances
