Greywright is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to lead the build-out and improvement of ground control systems and the software running on our autonomous vehicles. You will own the software operators use to plan, monitor, and command missions, and build vehicle-side features defined by our GNC, autonomy, networks, and systems teams.
You will set technical direction for ground control software, make key design decisions, and help hire and mentor engineers as the team grows.
What you'll do
- Lead continued development of Greywright's ground control systems, extending a working baseline with new capabilities, including mission planning, vehicle monitoring, command and control, and operator interfaces.
- Build vehicle-side system software features to requirements set by the GNC, autonomy, networks, electrical, and systems teams.
- Evolve the architecture for communication between ground control and vehicles, including telemetry, commands, and data logging over lossy and intermittent links.
- Design ground control software that supports multiple vehicles and integrates third-party OEM systems.
- Write reliable, well-tested code in C++, Python, Rust, or similar languages, and set coding standards for the team.
- Strengthen and expand CI/CD, simulation, and hardware-in-the-loop test infrastructure.
- Make sure software is secure, robust, and degrades gracefully when links or components fail.
- Support integration, testing, and field operations, and debug issues across the full stack.
- Lead design and code reviews, and mentor other engineers.
What you bring
- B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including building software for robotic, autonomous, or real-time systems.
- Strong proficiency in C++ and Python; experience with Rust or TypeScript is a plus.
- Experience building ground control, command-and-control, or operator software for vehicles or robots.
- Solid understanding of networking, messaging, and data serialization for distributed systems (e.g., DDS, ROS 2, Protobuf, MAVLink).
- Experience developing on Linux, including embedded and onboard computers.
- Track record of leading technical design and delivering production software.
- Experience working in, and improving, a large existing codebase.
- Comfort working directly with hardware, test, and field teams.
- Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time when needed.
- This role requires access to ITAR/EAR-controlled data; U.S. person status is required as defined by 22 CFR 120.62.
Nice to have
- Experience with ground control platforms such as QGroundControl, ATAK, or custom C2 systems.
- Familiarity with defense interoperability standards (e.g., UCI, STANAG 4586, MOSA).
- Experience with maritime or uncrewed vehicle software.
- Front-end experience building operator interfaces (e.g., React, Qt).
- Experience with simulation tools (e.g., Gazebo) and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
- Knowledge of secure software practices and cybersecurity frameworks for defense systems.
- Eligibility to obtain a U.S. Secret or higher security clearance; an active clearance is not required.
- Meaningful early-stage equity.
- Great health, dental, and vision insurance.
- Unlimited vacation.
