Overview
Swarmia was founded to help engineering organizations ship exceptional software at a sustainable pace. As Swarmia engineers, we’re not only building a platform for our customers but also ourselves.
We raised €10M in Series A funding in June 2025 and are growing fast. To help scale and expand the product, we’re looking for several Senior Software Engineers who are both generalists and specialists: you know a little about everything and a lot about something.
About Swarmia
Swarmia is a SaaS product that gives engineering organizations the visibility they need to ship faster without compromising culture or quality. Our customers include some of the world’s best software companies, such as Miro, Superhuman, and Bolt.
We’re a team of experienced engineers who care deeply about our craft. We practice what we preach: we use Swarmia to build Swarmia, and we’ve figured out how to ship fast while keeping technical debt low and our work-life balance healthy.
About the role and how we work
You’ll work as an AI-native product engineer across the full stack - from data models and APIs to UI - owning open-ended customer problems end-to-end. That often means starting with a working prototype rather than a finished spec, setting up the conditions for agents to do high-quality work, and making the judgment calls that agents still can’t.
We practice what we preach. Our founder and CEO Otto Hilska described the shift this way in The New Way: Building software in an agentic organization: “The job of an engineer used to be mostly about delivering a product. The new job is to deliver a system that delivers a product.”
Engineers use AI coding tools and agents as a default part of the workflow, maintain the repository context and skills that make agents effective, and review both human and agent-generated code with an eye on quality, blast radius, and long-term maintainability. Every Friday we demo what we’ve shipped. The culture is continuous shipping at a sustainable pace, high ownership, and low bureaucracy. No made-up deadlines, solo-projects, or needless bureaucracy.
We value initiative, ownership, transparency, feedback, and collaboration. When you see something that slows the system (flaky tests, missing agent context, unclear ownership, slow feedback loops), you fix it or start the conversation. Process exists to protect quality and flow, not to slow people down. We have enough process not to worry about the basics, but total freedom to influence what matters.
Examples of things you’ll do
Take open-ended product problems (not fully specified tickets) and turn them into working prototypes with agents in hours or a couple of days, then use the prototype to decide what to cut, rewrite, de-risk, or ship.
Collaborate live with product managers, designers, and other engineers in short joint sessions (Campfire-style) where the group shapes and iterates on real code rather than sequential handoffs.
Design and implement the system that makes agentic work reliable: repository instructions (AGENTS.md and skills), fast and trustworthy CI/tests, clear boundaries for what agents can own, and automatic handling of routine work (dependency updates, certain exceptions, boilerplate).
Build features end-to-end - database schema and GraphQL API changes, React components guided by the design system, integrations with GitHub, GitLab, Jira, Linear, and AI tool data - then split the work into reviewable pull requests.
Review at least as much code as you write. This includes interrogating agent-generated diffs (focusing on tests, trade-offs, security, and architecture rather than line-by-line reading), codifying repeated feedback into agent skills, and keeping review from becoming a bottleneck.
Help the team delegate more complex work to agents over time while maintaining quality. Debug slow queries, write the occasional complex SQL, jump into customer support chats for technical issues, and fix things that bug you before they become bigger problems.
Contribute to the product’s own AI and agent-related capabilities (and use Swarmia on Swarmia) so the platform stays ahead of how engineering organizations actually work.
Write the occasional blog post about something you’ve built or learned, and help teammates get unblocked.
What good looks like
Proven experience shipping product with modern AI coding tools and agents (Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, Codex, or similar). Comfortable prompting end-to-end prototypes, iterating on agent output, and knowing when to take over.
Ability to create and maintain the conditions agents need: clear repository context, skills/AGENTS.md files, reliable automated tests and CI, and sensible boundaries so agents can own meaningful work.
Strong product sense: you can take a customer problem and constraints, prototype solutions, and make (or recommend) the call on what to build. You’re comfortable owning outcomes, not just implementing specs.
Judgment under higher throughput: you review agent-generated code effectively, protect quality and knowledge sharing, and improve the system when volume or batch size changes the dynamics.
Full-stack product engineering skills (TypeScript, React, Node, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, cloud infrastructure). We still care more about how you think and how fast you learn than memorizing the exact stack.
Bonus: experience with agent orchestration, MCP-style tool use, custom agents, or measuring the impact of AI-assisted work.
Why you should join
The product: You’ll get to work on a domain that’s relevant and interesting to software engineers. Unlike many other tools in this space, Swarmia is not a tool for stack ranking individual engineers or just a dashboard for the leadership — instead, we serve useful insights and tools for the whole engineering organization. As an engineer, this means you deeply understand the problem space.
The developer experience: Since our product is about sensible software development, we take our own practices seriously. We’re deliberate about how we work, but processes aren’t heavier than they need to be. As one of our engineers described it after his first few weeks at Swarmia: “It feels like a bunch of adults came together and spent some serious time to figure out how to do this software thing well.”
The people: You’ll get very experienced colleagues with wide skillsets and different backgrounds. We pride ourselves in hiring and retaining smart, kind, and helpful people who are guaranteed to both teach you something and learn something from you.
The communication: The psychological safety here is real — people voice their concerns without fear, and we’re fast to try new things and scrap them if they don’t work. We’re deeply invested in the product and can have disagreements, but when we do, it’s always in a professional and empathetic manner. Low hierarchy in practice. No blame culture.
The transparency: We believe in total transparency across departments and leadership. You’ll get full access to all business metrics, leadership team meeting notes, and board meeting memos. We all contribute to this by having our conversations on public Slack channels, openly sharing meeting notes, and collaborating on request for comments (RFC) docs before implementing any bigger changes.
The balance: We’re a startup with the maturity of a more established company. Things just work, but your initiative matters a lot. We maintain a great work-life balance, don’t do any crunching, and keep up a sustainable pace without compromising quality.
Tech stack
Strict-mode TypeScript everywhere with high test coverage. React frontend using Apollo and a design system that’s tested with React Testing Library. Node backend with Apollo Server, slonik, and PostgreSQL. Infrastructure automated with Terraform on Google Cloud (GKE, PubSub) with automatic deployments to production after each change.
We don’t expect you to know all these tools beforehand, though - we’d be happy to show you the ropes. We care more about how you think and how fast you learn.
Interview process
We want to see how you work, not test your leetcode skills. The process includes:
Intro call with the recruiter to learn more about you and share more about Swarmia.
Hiring manager call - meeting with 1-2 engineering leads to deep dive into your experience.
Technical interview - no live-coding or home assignments. Conversation with 2 Swarmia engineers around the full spectrum of software development — frontend, backend, security, testing, DevOps, software engineering practices, and how you work with AI tools and agents - designed to explore your strengths and give you space to show what you know.
Leadership interview - a short discussion with our CEO and Head of Engineering to assess mutual culture fit.
We’ll prep you for each round and provide feedback regardless of outcome. We aim to respond within 1-2 days. Our interviews are a two-way conversation - each stage is a chance for you to learn about us just as much as we learn about you.
Your first few months at Swarmia
Your dev environment sets up with a single script. You’ll push your first change on day one. Over your first 90 days, you’ll ship increasingly complex features - from simple updates to prominent features - while getting comfortable with how we use agents and maintain the system around them.
You’ll get a designated onboarding buddy from your team, plus the whole team running training sessions on our culture, product, and technical architecture. You’ll have regular 1:1s with your team lead to calibrate and give feedback.
Benefits
70-90k€ annual salary plus meaningful equity.
Paid annual vacation with 10 extra days for new employees.
Flexible remote/office balance - our whole Product & Engineering organization is based in Finland. We value meeting teammates in person, but you don’t have to come to the Helsinki office every day.
Great work-life balance - we’re a startup, but we don’t work at an unsustainable pace (many of us have kids and other responsibilities beyond work).
Swarmia provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, genetics, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We’re committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce and welcome people from all backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and abilities.
