Senior Software Engineer - Front End
This is a remote position.
Job ID # 994
Ad Hoc is a technology company that empowers organizations to deliver scalable, impactful digital services. Using modern, agile methods, our team creates products that meet people’s needs and transform their experience of government.
Work on things that matter
Our collaborations have shaped some of the defining moments in public-sector service delivery. We’ve helped build products that connect Veterans to tailored services, help millions access affordable health care, and support important programs like Head Start. As we work with agencies to deliver critical services, we’re also changing how the government approaches technology.
Built for a remote life
Our culture, communications, and tools are built for remote work, enabling us to bring together top talent nationwide. At Ad Hoc, remote life empowers our teams to design work environments that fit their lives and that foster flexibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes for our customers.
Committed to high expectations and a welcoming culture
Ad Hoc values acceptance, accountability, and humility. We aren’t heroes. We learn from our mistakes and improve the process for the next time. We build small, inclusive teams to collaborate closely with our partners to solve the right problems and deliver software that works.
The Veterans Affairs business unit helps transform the VA into a modern digital services organization where Veteran outcomes are at the center of every effort. We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities
As a Senior Software Engineer - Front End, you will be an experienced, hands-on contributor responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining modern, accessible web applications that support critical government services.
You will work closely with engineers, designers, product managers, and stakeholders to deliver reliable, scalable, and user-centered solutions. With minimal oversight, you will take ownership of complex technical challenges, contribute to engineering best practices, and mentor other engineers.
While this role primarily focuses on front-end development using React and JavaScript, you will also collaborate with backend engineers and work across APIs and supporting systems to deliver integrated solutions.
Primary expectations of a Senior Software Engineer - Front End include:
- Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable, accessible, and high-performing web applications using React and JavaScript.
- Own complex engineering tasks from technical design and implementation through testing, deployment, and maintenance.
- Develop reusable components and contribute to front-end architecture, coding standards, and development best practices.
- Collaborate with backend engineers to integrate APIs and ensure reliable communication between front-end and backend systems.
- Build and maintain automated testing solutions using tools such as Cypress and Playwright.
- Support continuous integration and deployment workflows using GitHub Actions.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues, identifying opportunities to improve application performance, reliability, and maintainability.
- Collaborate with designers, product managers, and engineers to translate user and business requirements into effective technical solutions.
- Participate in technical design discussions, architecture decisions, code reviews, and engineering planning.
- Mentor junior engineers through technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and collaborative problem-solving.
- Communicate technical decisions, challenges, and recommendations clearly to team members, clients, and stakeholders.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes, tools, and development practices.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and 7+ years of professional software engineering experience. Relevant years of experience may be substituted for education.
- Expert-level proficiency in React and JavaScript, with demonstrated experience developing and maintaining production web applications.
- Strong understanding of modern front-end architecture, component-based development, and application state management.
- Experience integrating front-end applications with RESTful APIs and backend services.
- Working knowledge of GitHub Actions or similar CI/CD tooling.
- Experience with automated front-end testing frameworks such as Cypress and Playwright.
- Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, including version control, code reviews, debugging, and testing.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams in an Agile development environment.
- Ability to independently own technical deliverables, solve complex problems, and communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or VA.gov.
- Exposure to backend technologies and frameworks, particularly Ruby on Rails.
- Experience developing accessible applications in accordance with Section 508 and WCAG standards.
- Experience working with design systems and reusable UI component libraries.
- Experience modernizing or maintaining large-scale government digital services.
- Experience mentoring other engineers and contributing to team-wide technical improvements.
