About the team and the role
The Observability Platform team builds and operates the infrastructure that helps eBay teams monitor, troubleshoot, and improve the reliability of large-scale distributed systems. The platform supports the telemetry and reliability needs of thousands of microservices across eBay and operates at hyperscale, processing billions of time series and petabytes of log data using modern open-source technologies such as Prometheus, ClickHouse, OpenTelemetry, and related tools.
The Role:
As a Senior Software Engineer on this team, you will design and build high-performance distributed systems in Golang that power eBay’s observability platform across metrics, logs, traces, and related workflows. You will work across the full telemetry lifecycle—from ingestion and processing to storage, query, and platform services—building reliable backend systems that operate at massive scale.
You will partner closely with SREs, platform engineers, and service owners to solve complex reliability challenges, improve operational excellence, and help shape the future of observability at eBay. This role offers the opportunity to work on business-critical infrastructure, contribute to open-source technologies, and grow through direct exposure to some of eBay’s most complex engineering problems. This role also includes participation in the team’s on-call rotation in support of production reliability.
What you will accomplish
- Design, build, and operate scalable, fault-tolerant backend services in Golang for eBay’s observability platform
- Develop high-throughput systems for ingesting, redefining, storing, and querying telemetry data across logs, metrics, and traces
- Improve the performance, reliability, and maintainability of distributed systems that support hyperscale observability workloads
- Strengthen Kubernetes-based production systems through resilient service design, self-healing patterns, autoscaling, and operational excellence
- Partner with SREs, platform teams, and service owners to translate observability needs into robust platform capabilities and developer-friendly tools
- Contribute to architecture reviews, production readiness efforts, and post-incident improvements that raise the reliability bar across the platform
- Help evolve engineering standards, code quality, and best practices for Go-based services running in cloud-native environments
- Expand your technical breadth by working across distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, open-source observability tooling, and platform engineering
What you will bring
- 7+ years of experience in software engineering, backend infrastructure, or distributed systems engineering
- Strong hands-on programming expertise in Golang, with a proven track record of building reliable, scalable backend or infrastructure services
- Deep understanding of distributed systems concepts including scalability, concurrency, fault tolerance, performance optimization, and system reliability
- Experience designing, building, and operating production services in Kubernetes or similar cloud-native environments
- Strong knowledge of observability concepts including metrics, logs, traces, telemetry pipelines, and production monitoring
- Experience with technologies such as Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, ClickHouse, Grafana, or similar observability and data infrastructure tools
- Familiarity with high-throughput data pipelines, time-series systems, and large-scale microservices environments
- Ability to collaborate effectively across software engineering, SRE, and platform teams to solve complex production challenges
- Experience contributing to open-source infrastructure or building internal developer platforms is a plus
- Familiarity with JavaScript/React or user-facing observability experiences is a plus, but the primary focus of this role is backend engineering in Golang
