Company Profile
CloudMargin is an award winning, growth-stage FinTech company offering an innovative Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) service. We are rapidly challenging the way financial and corporate institutions manage the collateral and risk associated with derivatives trading. We believe in offering our community an affordable, easy to deploy and scalable service.
Backed by professional investment and corporate investors, our global team works closely across product, technology and sales disciplines. Our flat structure and ethos of openness and communication means you’ll be engaged with everyone in the business and have the senior leadership team as one of your key stakeholders.
Primary Purpose of Role
We’re looking for a Senior Engineer to join a full stack team dedicated to making CloudMargin’s platform faster, more stable and more resilient, and to leading critical, high-impact work that needs specialist expertise. Based in London, you’d work closely with our Principal Engineer and one other Senior Engineer. Because the team works across the whole platform, your work will shape technical decisions that affect every part of the product, and you’ll work regularly with other teams and senior stakeholders across the business.
Recent work includes cutting latency on one of our file import types by 90%, which helped onboard a strategic client and reduced database load, and leading in-depth testing that de-risked a major platform-wide upgrade.
Core Accountabilities
- Deliver major improvement projects. Help shape and deliver large pieces of work such as performance overhauls and platform migrations, from investigation through to rollout.
- Fix systemic problems. Use tracing, metrics and logs to find recurring stability and performance issues across services and databases, then fix them or partner with the owning team to do so.
- Own critical shared services. Maintain and improve essential services such as authentication and data access control, and help raise the standard of our shared libraries and service templates.
- Keep our older platform healthy. Between major projects, deliver a steady stream of smaller fixes and improvements to the older parts of the platform that run critical client workflows.
- Be a go-to expert when things go wrong. When production issues arise, you’ll be one of the people the business turns to, using your knowledge of the whole platform to diagnose and resolve them quickly. You’ll also step in on urgent, high-risk issues that need focused expertise, resolving risks before they become outages.
- Join our on-call rota. You will be required to take part in our out-of-hours on-call incident rota once you have completed probation and settled into the team (usually around 5–6 months in). An on-call allowance is paid.
- Work across the organisation. Collaborate closely with product delivery teams and our platform team, respecting their ownership while helping introduce better architectural and operational patterns.
Experience
- Senior-level backend engineering. Substantial production experience (5+ years) building and maintaining applications in TypeScript/Node.js. You’ve owned services end to end, from design through to running them in production. You also have some front-end experience and are happy to get involved in front-end work when it’s needed.
- Hands-on AWS operational experience. You’re comfortable with infrastructure-as-code, containers, serverless and CI/CD, and you understand how these fail in production.
- Strong production debugging skills. You’ve diagnosed performance and stability problems in live systems you didn’t build, using observability tooling such as Datadog, and you can work at the database level (MySQL or similar) when queries are the problem.
Skills
- Effective and pragmatic approach to AI. You use AI coding assistants and agents to speed up development, investigation and debugging, and you have clear views on how to get the most out of them, while also understanding AI’s limits and the problems these tools can create.
- Clear written communication. You can explain a technical risk or trade-off to engineers and non-engineers alike.
- Self-direction. You take ambiguous problems, work out what matters most and drive them to resolution with minimal steer.
- Making others better. You make the engineers around you better through thoughtful code review, sharing what you know, and improving how we build and run software.
- Enjoyment of variety. You’re as comfortable making steady small improvements to an older, complex system as you are delivering a large project.
