Engineer Sr., SystemsWork Schedule:
Hybrid – Arvada, COMoog is a world-class provider of spacecraft propulsion systems, avionics, flight software, and structures. Our depth of expertise in these subsystems positions us uniquely to develop a high-value vertically integrated space vehicle solution to our customers. We invite top performers to apply to become a part of our lean and agile team.
The Arvada, CO location is nestled near the foothills of the front range, just west of Denver. The office is a 10-minute drive from downtown Golden and Arvada and is an easy commute from most of the Denver Metro area. Colorado offers year-round outdoor activities and is a melting pot of cultures.
Moog’s Space and Defense Group is seeking an experienced Senior Spacecraft Avionics, Power and Wiring (APW) Engineer to join our Space Vehicles team in Arvada, CO. This includes all phases from conceptual design to development, integration, test, and delivery. Typical space vehicle applications include spacecraft buses, a “smart upper stage”, an in-space transfer vehicle, and a hosted payload platform. The selected candidate will be responsible for leading the power subsystem and working side-by-side with other engineers in a team environment. You will report to the Systems Engineering Manager and will have a 9/80 hybrid work schedule, which provides every other Friday off!
To be considered for the Senior Spacecraft Avionics, Power and Wiring (APW) Engineer role, here’s what you’ll typically need to bring with you:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of relevant aerospace electrical engineering experience
- Experience defining or integrating avionics, command-and-data-handling, electrical power, and harness architectures.
- Experience developing and interpreting electrical schematics, block diagrams, interface-control documents, I/O assignments, connector pinouts, and wiring or harness drawings.
- Experience performing spacecraft electrical analyses, such as power budgets, battery and solar-array sizing, and voltage drop analysis.
- Experience supporting electrical hardware through requirements, design, procurement, manufacturing, integration, test, troubleshooting, and delivery.
- Experience leading technical teams, design reviews, supplier oversight, trade studies, and anomaly investigations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting technical information to multidisciplinary teams, leadership, customers, and suppliers.
- Ability to support occasional travel and off-shift testing and support when required.
It would be great if you also had:
- 7+ years of spacecraft or high-reliability aerospace electrical systems experience, including 3+ years of direct spacecraft avionics, electrical power, and/or wiring experience.
- Demonstrated technical ownership of a spacecraft avionics or APW subsystem through design, integration, environmental test, and delivery.
- Experience with redundant and fault-tolerant avionics architectures, command and telemetry interfaces, time synchronization, and hardware-to-flight-software interfaces.
- Knowledge of grounding, bonding, shielding, isolation, fault protection, EMC/EMI, workmanship, and verification principles and standards.
- Experience with spacecraft data buses and electrical interfaces, such as SpaceWire, CAN, MIL-STD-1553, Ethernet, RS-422/485, or comparable protocols.
- Knowledge of radiation effects and radiation-tolerant avionics design considerations.
- Experience with spacecraft EMI/EMC design, analysis, troubleshooting, and test.
- Experience with electrical simulation, analysis, ECAD, or harness-design tools.
- Experience with lithium-ion batteries, solar arrays, spacecraft power electronics, or high-energy electrical systems.
- Experience performing component derating, power quality, and worst-case circuit analyses.
As the Senior Spacecraft Avionics, Power and Wiring (APW) Engineer, you will:
- Develop and maintain a system-level understanding of the spacecraft bus and its avionics, electrical power, and wiring (APW) architectures, interfaces, operating modes, and mission constraints.
- Define and manage spacecraft avionics architectures, including flight computers, command and data handling, data-acquisition hardware, data buses, time synchronization, and command, telemetry, analog, discrete, and digital interfaces.
- Define spacecraft electrical power architectures, including generation, energy storage, regulation, distribution, switching, grounding, redundancy, load shedding, and fault protection.
- Perform trade studies and electrical analyses, including power budgets, mission load profiles, solar-array and battery sizing, component derating, voltage drop, power quality, inrush current, and worst-case circuit analyses.
- Develop and maintain functional block diagrams, electrical schematics, interface-control documents, I/O and power-switching assignments, connector pinouts, and cable/harness designs.
- Define grounding, bonding, shielding, isolation, cable separation, wire sizing, connector selection, and harness routing requirements.
- Coordinate APW requirements and interfaces with systems engineering, flight software, GNC, communications, payload, thermal, mechanical, propulsion, and other spacecraft disciplines.
- Develop and manage APW requirements, technical baselines, verification plans, and fault-detection, isolation, and recovery approaches throughout the program lifecycle.
- Work with Moog Supply Chain and suppliers of avionics, power electronics, batteries, solar arrays, harnesses, and other electrical hardware to support procurement and provide technical oversight.
- Prepare and present technical content for trade studies, design reviews, test-readiness reviews, customer presentations, and proposals.
- Develop and support electrical ground support equipment (EGSE), integration plans, test procedures, and verification documentation in coordination with other disciplines.
- Support manufacturing, integration, functional and environmental testing, EMC/EMI testing, troubleshooting, anomaly resolution, and delivery of the APW subsystem.
