Job Description:
The Senior Technical Product Owner owns the product backlog, release cadence and stakeholder intake for the Retail Performance Engine (RPE) platform. You work in partnership with the Product Manager and a technical delivery team. You turn business needs, support issues and client requests into clear, prioritized work, and you keep the team and stakeholders aligned from idea through release.
What makes someone successful in this role
- Exceptional communication. You translate fluently between technical teams and product, business, support and client stakeholders. You explain technical constraints in plain language and capture business needs precisely enough for engineers to build from.
- Curiosity and persistence. You ask questions until the answer is clear. You follow up, as many times as it takes, when an unanswered question is blocking the team. You document decisions and meeting outcomes so nothing gets lost.
- Ownership. You make trade-off decisions among scope, quality and timeline, and you are accountable for what ships.
Role Responsibilities
- Backlog and sprint ownership: Own and prioritize the backlog in Azure DevOps. Break epics into user stories with clear acceptance criteria, plan sprints with the team, and accept completed work.
- Requirements discovery: Lead kickoff and discovery sessions with stakeholders and other teams. Identify dependencies, overlaps with existing systems, data and file-feed needs, and open questions. Write up summaries and next steps.
- Intake and triage: Serve as the primary contact for support, client managers and internal teams. Convert emailed issues and requests into spikes, stories or bugs, and prioritize them against sprint capacity.
- Release coordination: Plan releases with the team and communicate release dates and code-freeze windows. Prepare or review release notes and keep stakeholders informed before and after deployment.
- Stakeholder communication: Give regular status updates on progress and risks. Escalate blockers early and give leadership the information needed to resolve them.
- Roadmap and vision: Work with the Product Manager and stakeholders to shape product goals and a prioritized roadmap that balances customer needs, business value and technical capability.
- Customer engagement: Join customer and client-facing meetings to understand needs and make sure what is built delivers value.
- Cross-team collaboration: Coordinate work that spans multiple teams or products, such as loyalty/rewards, CashPlease and administration tooling.
- Continuous improvement: Help maintain Azure DevOps practices, improve the SDLC process, and keep the backlog well groomed.
- Team leadership: Informally mentor less experienced Product Owners and help energize the team around product goals. Support technology modernization efforts (APIs, AI, services, cloud) as they affect the roadmap.
- Fulfill other duties as assigned.
Required Skills
- Six or more years of relevant experience, including four years in SDLC/Agile development and three years managing backlogs or roadmaps (Azure DevOps preferred).
- Experience working with large development teams and with APIs, web services and data integrations.
- A track record of gathering requirements from ambiguous or incomplete input and getting stakeholders to decisions.
- Comfort working with a distributed team, including [offshore/time-zone overlap expectations].
- Experience in financial services, loyalty/rewards or similar data-driven products is a plus.
- A college or university degree, or equivalent experience.
- Preferred certifications: SAFe; Product Owner/Manager (Pragmatic, CPO, CSPO, PSPO); cloud (Microsoft Azure preferred).
