Show job description
Optus is an Australian telecommunications company, delivering more than 11 million services to our customers every day across mobile, broadband and digital solutions.

Based in Macquarie Park - Sydney, as the Senior Technical Specialist, Infrastructure Engineering, you’ll be the national subject matter expert and document owner for equipment installation, commissioning and integration standards across our Access Networks infrastructure. You’ll help shape the standards, quality practices and supporting documentation that underpin the planning, design and deployment of the Optus mobile network.

This is a high-impact opportunity to support the strategy, engineering and enablement of mobile access site infrastructure, with a focus on 4G, 5G and emerging radio technologies, power systems and network resiliency. You’ll work across complex technical and supplier environments to deliver scalable improvements, simplify operations and enhance service delivery.

What You'll Do

  • Own and maintain the quality standards, guidelines and technical documentation that support the planning, design and deployment of Optus’ mobile network.
  • Evaluate new products and solution roadmaps, lead site trials and influence vendors to deliver innovations across power systems, telemetry, observability and network resilience.
  • Develop installation practices, build products, systems and databases that enable mobile deployment programs and improve operational outcomes.
  • Design and document end-to-end solutions that align with Australian Standards, strategic roadmaps and architecture requirements, including training and operational considerations.
  • Provide technical direction to deployment, service assurance, network operations, field teams, suppliers and third-party partners.
  • Lead supplier forums, site inspections and quality or security audits, using root cause analysis to resolve issues and continually improve standards.
  • Support the lifecycle management, decommissioning and modernisation of legacy network site infrastructure.

What makes you perfect for the role?

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering or a related discipline, or significant subject matter expertise gained through at least 10 years’ relevant experience, with at least seven years working on major telecommunications projects.
  • Strong expertise in 4G and 5G mobile technologies, transmission equipment, Mobile RAN site solutions and telecommunications power systems, including batteries, generators, hybrid systems, advanced site controllers, telemetry and secure remote management.
  • Demonstrated experience with mobile network deployment, site build, installation and commissioning standards, quality practices and lifecycle management.
  • The ability to act as a technical subject matter expert, provide clear direction to internal and external stakeholders, and work effectively across complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
  • Awareness of EME and ACMA regulatory requirements, Australian Standards and relevant Optus processes.
  • Strong understanding of network elements, configurations and associated data, together with technical knowledge of programming, IT infrastructure, databases, coding and macros.
  • Proven problem-solving, engineering, testing and analytical skills, including the ability to design test cases and develop practical workarounds.

The good stuff…

  • Competitive remuneration and employee discounts, including $80 monthly credit, 25% off Optus products and shopping discounts with our retail partners.
  • Flexible working arrangements, with three days in the office and two days remote, plus a vibrant and collaborative office campus with great amenities.
  • Competitive leave policies, including additional ‘Connected’ days and inclusive, carer-neutral paid Parental Leave of up to 16 weeks.
  • Build meaningful connections through employee-led networks and diversity initiatives, including Culture Connect, Elevate Women, Disability Network and Express Yourself (LGBTQIA+).
  • Put your wellbeing first with free 24/7 counselling and support services, and travel conveniently with a free Optus bus service.
